Independence Day Resurgence (5/10)

This is probably one of the strangest sequels that I've seen, with so much happening off-screen after the original movie it feels more like a reboot than a direct sequel.

I liked it more that I thought, Resurgence is definitely entertaining throughout and the comedic elements work really well. However, lots of scenes could have been reworked or cut. The first Independence Day is more grounded like where Will Smith wakes up in L.A. and doesn't even realize that they are under alien attack. Resurgence feels like a piece of fan-fiction and things like the moon base for instance, although cool to look at, didn't really serve a role and didn't need to be there.

My biggest problem with Resurgence is that the main players Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch are 1 dimensional characters acting out a schtick rather than having character arcs. It could have been so much better if they had shared some earlier scenes like playing chess in the first one and then it takes a worldwide alien attack to bring them together.

Instead of playing around on the moon base where both the space tug and super weapon have zero impact on the story, they could've simply had Goldblum and Hirsch fishing on his boat. This would later payoff like in the first one where Goldblum has the revelation and says "it's like chess." Here, without getting into spoilers he could have said "it's like fishing" when coming up with their plan to defeat the aliens.

"The Fearless Four": a delightful animated flick from the early 90s with some amazing music to go along with it (and CG that actually doesn't stink, oddly enough).

Patriots Day (2016)

8/10

Drama/Thriller about the boston marathon bombing in 2013. I thought it was really good and done really well. The acting was good. There were a few comedic moments/lines here and there to lighten the mood, which i thought were ok.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

It was alright, great action but felt too similar in scope to all the rest which is expected I suppose. Feels like the Star Wars name carried it. Not bad though

The Thin Red Line

A very long, but very good WW2 movie.

The Pagemaster (1992..I think)

A few weeks back I was browsing the book section at the thrift store and came across a really nice hardcover of The Pagemaster, I thought to myself, "Wow, I didn't know that movie was based off a book!" Come to find out, I was wrong. I usually avoid novelizations of movies like the plague, but this was more of a picture book with beautiful cull page illustrations. After finishing the book, I watched the film. It wasn't bad, the animation was alright and it was a great premise. If I wasn't such a retro head I probably wouldn't have liked it as much.

Leprechaun 3 (1995)

I caught a censored version on SyFy the other day. One of those "so bad it's funny" movies. It was the first in the series to be released direct-to-video in the series.

The entire series really is stupid, but it's awesome in the sense of laughing at just how stupid it is.

Did you see the one where he's "In tha hood"? Or the one with Leprechaun going into space? It's hard to believe they kept getting Warwick Davis to play that role. They must have spent the entire budget on his salary.

Boyhood (2014)

Broke this into 3 viewings due to the length of the film. It was neat from a technical aspect, using the same actors over a 10 year period. Kind of odd to think of them shooting some footage and then being like, "Alright, that's a wrap- see you guys again in 3 years."

Overall I wasn't too absorbed in the story, it was fairly boring and typical...just like life. The acting seemed contrived but again typical of real life so maybe that's what made it seem awkward at times. I still don't know why Patricia Arquette hasn't fixed her snaggle tooth, and both the kids were olive skinned and looked nothing at all like their onscreen parents which hindered things a bit.

Not a bad movie, but not inspiring until the end when you realize its the same boy, then realize again it was all scripted anyways.
