Well... apparently those plans for a season 11 of the show are now canceled after Barr made some racially charged comments on Twitter.

Dang it. I love the new season. But stupid games get stupid prizes.

As they say, "That escalated quickly". I love the term "racially charged". As though one could possibly know the true motivations for such a comment. The fact remains that Valerie Jarrett is indeed a slimeball. Still, this was a stupid move on Roseanne's part. Real smooth. This country is so full of pantywaists now it's pathetic. We'll get upset over anything. We're going to get crushed by countries like China because the coming generations of Americans will be wimps and whiners who can't do anything for themselves and need to live in constant safe spaces. You love this signature.

shakin steak wrote :Calling someone an ape, in and of itself, is not racist. However, the historical and cultural context towards other cultures using a "race"-based classification and hierarchy can be. You would be denying their humanity by treating them as not human based on their perceived race. I say "perceived" because you don't have to be something in order for someone to think you are and treat you unethically because of it. Charles Darwin was mocked for his theory of evolution with images of his head drawn on a chimp body; the 1800s equivalent of photoshop. Not racist against Darwin as a human, but intended to humiliate him for his idea that humans and apes share a common ancestor. Calling someone the "missing link" would also work. The Scopes Monkey Trial (1925) on evolution in schools had images of the 3 wise monkeys covering their eyes, mouth, and ears. Again, trying to harm the idea of evolution in a court of law, not harm a group of people. Dennis Hopper as King Koopa points and says, "Monkey!" after de-evolving Scapelli into a chimp in the Super Mario Bros. Movie. (Well, that would be species-ist since King Koopa is a reptile and wants to get rid of mammals.) Calling Bluto a "big gorilla" for kidnapping Olive Oyl would be antagonizing his size and strength, while insulting his intelligence, but that's a result of his actions. Bluto is portrayed as a brute. I don't think Popeye goes around thinking Bluto actually is a gorilla or gives him bananas daily to "show him his place". The arcade game Donkey Kong re-purposed Bluto into a gorilla. The actions of kidnapping a girl are the same, and the name is intended to make him a "dumb or stubborn" ape according to Miyamoto. While it seems like a rip-off of King Kong, there are no intended racial implications for Donkey Kong. King Kong has a racial component for sure. Perhaps the backstory for Donkey Kong is that Mario went to DK Island, forced Donkey Kong onto a ship, and had him build skyscrapers using gorilla labor. Mario has a cage and whip by the second game! Gasp! Donkey Kong's offspring has to break the chains of oppression, one at a time (two if you can). Or maybe Donkey Kong is just a pet idk. It's interesting your avatar is Rod Serling because I always thought he had a chimp-like quality to his face. Not as an insult, mind you, but because the way his forehead wrinkles, ears, and stiff-upper lip were when he talked reminded me of the makeup in Planet of the Apes. The last George Bush has similar simian-ness in the political cartoons where they exaggerated his ears and features to play up the, um, intelligence he was mocked for. Some people just have features that are reminiscent of other animals, but bird-noses, doe-eyes, and rat-like features, for example, don't have the cultural weight of "go back to the jungle" as much as monkeys, chimps, and apes do. I'll try to not expand further on the subject, but I would be remiss not to answer this question. I despise all this Political Puppet Theater. Roseanne has been on the fringe for years now, and I'm surprised it took this long for her to get backlash. What she said was wrong because it was culturally incensed in regards to race and religious affiliation. She did not attack an idea or action. She attacked a person she did not agree with politically to hit out at Muslims and people who have been called apes to dehumanize them. This was intended to hurt a group of people she did not like. Not to mention the dressing up as Hitler to bake cookie people in an oven. Trivializing the humanity of those who died during The Holocaust as the punchline for a joke. Wow, so edgy. The only thing about this cancellation I will miss is that there wasn't a Halloween episode. I'd also find it funny if John Goodman reprised his role as Dan to make a joke that Roseanne was dead the entire last season. |
