I liked seeing City Connection up there last week. I have fond memories of that game.

Last week didn't have any Virtual Console releases, most likely because of Mario Super Sluggers being released on the Wii U eShop. But we do have something good for the week of April 7, 2016.

Wii U Virtual Console:

Game and Watch Gallery 4 (GBA)
$6.99

This, I believe, is one of the last games to be released that is part of the 3DS Ambassador's Program. Personally, I feel this is the best game in the Game and Watch Gallery series as it offers a range of games both new to the franchise, and some that was used in the previous games, with enhanced graphics for the GBA. Also, the Japanese Virtual Console release of the game was the first time the game actually received a Japanese release. Yeah, why they didn't release it in Japan before is beyond me. Plus, the multiplayer is disabled in the Virtual Console release as games like Boxing and Donkey Kong 3 uses the GBA link cable.

After Game and Watch Gallery 4 was released... Nintendo announced that the were going to release Game and Watch e-Reader cards, which would include Classic and Modern modes of some of these games. Unfortunately, Game and Watch-e ended up being cancelled. The only thing Game and Watch game released on an e-Reader card is Manhole, which was one of the cards that came bundled with the e-Reader.

On a sidenote... Mega Man Legends 2 has finally been released for Playstation Network. Yes, now you can play the entire Mega Man Legends series on the Playstation 3. Yes, unfortunately, it ended up being the only Mega Man Legends sequel, which made the 2011 cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 that much harsher.

Week of 4/14/2016:

Wii U Virtual Console:

Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (DS)
$6.99

New 3DS Virtual Console:

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES)
$7.99

Super Metroid (SNES)
$7.99

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
$7.99

This week brings in the last batch of SNES games that was announced last month for the New 3DS. And it's a good batch that has a few of what I consider some of my personal favorite SNES games... not to mention A Link to the Past seems to go hand-in-hand with A Link Between Worlds. Who knows what more SNES games we'll see for the New 3DS.  As of right now, I'm still considering getting Earthbound.

Brain Age was actually made available for free back in 2014 for Japan, Europe, and Australia as a special commercial download to show off Nintendo DS games on the Wii U. Unfortunately, North America didn't get that free promotion. Yeah... it's another one of those times where I tend to hate Nintendo of America sometimes.

Week of 4/21/2016:

Wii U Virtual Console:

Mario Party DS (DS)
$9.99

Who here wants to play Mario Party DS on the Wii U Virtual Console? Oh, and forget about the multiplayer unless you want to hand the Wii U gamepad over to another player, because download play is completely disabled for this release. Yeah... you're essentially playing a gimped version of the game. Plus, even looking beyond that, the Mario Party franchise had already gone downhill at this point. Yes, this is the last game in the series that Hudson Soft developed.... and the franchise got even worse after Nd Cube took over. But it isn't really saying much. I owned Mario Party 8 for the original Wii, and that game was god awful. Ah, well. I think I'm going to stick with Mario Party 4 for the Gamecube.

It might also be nice for Star Fox 64 to get a Virtual Console release... but then again, the 3DS version is already good enough for me, IMO. Still might be better than Star Fox Zero. Yeah... I was planning on picking up Star Fox Zero after work today, but considering how mixed the reviews were to the game, I may end up reconsider getting that game. A shame too since Platinum Games had not made a bad game until now... plus, we probably won't be getting another installment for a while.

game informer's review of ratchet & clank:
"old mechanics that feel new!"
game informer's review of star fox zero:
"old mechanics that don't feel new. oh but there's gyro controls!"

yeah I think I'm getting the game regardless of how ignorant the reviews are.

Last week didn't have an official Virtual Console release as it seems that Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii was released on the Wii U eShop instead. Whether or not you're getting that, or the New 3DS version, it's better than getting the expensively priced retail copy of Xenoblade.

Still, if they're going to release Wii games as their official placeholder for the Wii U Virtual Console, then I kind of wish that they'd release games for the 3DS Virtual Console as well. Especially the SNES games for the New 3DS. But at least this week brings in a release for the Wii U and New 3DS. This is the week of May 5, 2016.

Wii U Virtual Console:

Style Savvy (DS)
$9.99

New 3DS Virtual Console:

Super Punch-Out (SNES)
$7.99

As I mentioned before when Super Punch Out was released for the Wii U Virtual Console, I reviewed that game back in 2009... and it got a little bit of a backlash. Rightfully so as a lot of what I said about the game is pretty damn stupid. But I still hold to my opinion that the game is still weak addition to the series... especially when compared to both Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Punch-Out for the Wii. Part of it, I believe, is due to how Super Punch-Out is trying to be more like the arcade Punch-Out titles. While they were a good way to kick off the series, I don't really feel like they hold up all that way. Super Punch-Out is a little bit better than the arcade titles, but still not very good.

As for Style Savvy... I know there are some people who enjoy that game. But I feel like part of it was when Nintendo was making a game that appeals to women. And yes, I do know for a fact that a lot of women actually owned a DS at the time as this was when Nintendo appealed to the casual gamers. However, I doubt these same women even owns a Wii U... and even if they did, I don't think they would actually look through the Virtual Console lineup, and see Style Savvy on there.

I did try posting last week's Virtual Console releases throughout the week, but the threat wouldn't post probably due to image links I've been using. Now that we have the next Virtual Console update, then I will post both last week and this week's updates.

Anyway, I have held off a little bit throughout the week on posting last week's Virtual Console update due to the recent server crash that went on this site with Hostgator, and I was kind of waiting for the Liquidweb update to see if some of the lost files have been backed up. Right now, I think it's safe to say that this thread has lost 6 months of Virtual Console updates. Not a big deal though. You can always check the Nintendo eShop to see what is available. Nevertheless, the weekly updates continue. Here is what has been released both this week and the last.

Week of November 24, 2016:

Wii U Virtual Console:

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
$9.99

New 3DS Virtual Console:

Breath of Fire II (SNES)
$7.99

Week of December 1, 2016:

Wii U Virtual Console:

Advance Wars: Dual Strike (DS)
$9.99

Last week also brought in the Nintendo eShop cyber deals. But since that is pretty much just about over, then I won't go over the discounts.

It might be a good thing that I waited until the week after to post this week's Virtual Console updates since this week's Nintendo eShop releases, in general, was a disappointment. Super Mario Maker for the 3DS was the only noteworthy thing, but even then, it's not something I'd really recommend as it doesn't have the online sharing features the Wii U version had, which was really what made Super Mario Maker in the first place. Sure, you can Streetpass levels, but I'm doubtful there's really going to be very many people who picked up the game knowing that it's a gimped version of the Wii U game.

Also, in my opinion, I find it a bit pointless to get Majora's Mask for the Wii U, mainly because the 3DS version is already out there. Still don't really like how Nintendo decides to pull more George Lucas shenanigans, especially since we've been seeing it more with the Zelda franchise. But it is out there. Though if there is one reason to get the Wii U version, it's if you already purchased Majora's Mask on the Wii Virtual Console, and being able to get the $2 upgrade.
