There is a fantastic Don Rickles documentary called Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project from 2007 I highly recommend. It was a great look at his career and the standup that he was still performing. I didn't realize what an honor it was to be roasted by him, because many of his amazing ability until I saw that documentary.

Don Rickles is from that era in entertainment where if you had talent, you could do any project to launch your career. Standup comedy was always a crowd pleaser but the real "star maker" was movies, not television.
In the early 60's Don made an excellent impression and became known, outside the comedy club scene, when he landed a role in the Roger Corman cult classic movie, "X: The Man with X-Ray Vision", with popular actor Ray Milland in the starring role as a scientist that tries his experimental eye drops on himself - with horrifying results. My apologies, I was not able to find a shorter clip featuring Don Rickles. I wanted you guys to see Don in this surprisingly interesting sci-fi/horror film because this movie doesn't get the attention it deserves - in my humble opinion. |
One of the things that Don Rickles did that I don't think has been mentioned yet is that he appeared on numerous '60s sitcoms in guest roles. The one that most sticks out in my memory was the time he was on Gilligan's Island.

That's a cool episode of Gilligan's Island, Don Rickles fooled Ginger into thinking he was a, "good guy victimized by unlucky breaks in life".
And you're correct Superman, Don Rickles was an excellent actor able to stay "in character" while making his usual bigger than life impression on the audience. |
I was only able to find one scene from that episode of Gilligan's Island on YouTube. Sadly, it's not the aforementioned scene with Ginger, but it's still a good scene nonetheless.

I can't find the words to tell you what it's like to see all the stars that made Television, movies and stage performances so memorable in the 20th century leave us - one by one.
Don Rickles was a gem to many, but a source of controversy to others. Some actually thought Don was hateful. They didn't recognize that "mean Don" was all an act. The fact that he counted as friends some of the most famous people in entertainment tells ya that Don Rickles was a good guy and an awesome actor! |
You guys should really watch Kelly's Heroes if you haven't already. Great movie.
The women of New Vegas ask me a lot if there's a Mrs. New Vegas. Well, of course there is! You're her. And you're still just as perfect as the day we met.
