Turn back time with video games

Do you remember the days when you used to beg your parents to buy you some kind of video game for Christmas? And if that failed, you’d have to line up waiting for a five minute turn on your friend’s Gameboy, as he was the only kid in the street who had one?

Today we have so many gaming choices available that it’s difficult to imagine ever running out of new games to try. We can play on our phones, on consoles, online or on a PC, and many of them don’t cost a bean! However, no matter how great the new games are in terms of what you can do on them and the graphics that they have, it’s still fun to take a trip down memory lane and play the original games that you used to love – or the ones that your parents used to tell you about, that, for a while at least, seemed to have been lost in the mists of time.

Pong is one of the best examples. For many, this is the absolute original video game and even though next to today’s games this seems almost ludicrously simple, it’s still a lot of fun to play. Pong is basically a simulation of table tennis, but you don’t have graphics of players, racquets or balls. You just have lines representing the paddles and a dot representing the ball. First released by Atari in 1972, this game has stood the test of time and you can now download it with different apps and play it on today’s smartphones.

There are other games that you can now play online to get a blast of the seventies today too. For example, casino gaming has never been so easily accessible as today – when you can play those casino classics on hundreds of different sites such as 32red or Genting casino. I’ve never had the time to visit a land-based casino, but now I can play games like roulette, blackjack and slots on my pc or on my phone whenever I feel like it. You can review roulette online options here – playing either the American version or the European version, depending on how much of a house edge you wish to play against. Many of the sites allow players to play in demo mode, where you only bet with virtual money so there’s no financial risk. While it’s fun to play this way, I’ve found that I prefer to have at least a little money riding on the outcome – otherwise when you do win, it feels a little bit of a hollow victory! And as most gaming sites offer great sign-up bonuses, you can get quite a few games out of an initial small investment.

Bingo is another game that gives you a retro blast, too. Although when I was growing up bingo was something that my Gran and her friends played, now that the game is online, it’s a game for all ages. And just one game will be enough to convince you. It can get really exciting as your numbers are ticked off on your ticket, and you’re down to ‘one to go’ before you win. Usually, someone else pips you to the post, but as it’s a game of chance, that win could be yours the next time you play.

Today’s technology means that we can always recapture entertainment from the past – and some of the games that have never really gone away; they’ve just got better since it became possible to play them online!
