Almost exactly. In fact, it is 476 feet from my door to the train station. Your "little detour" to Point Pleasant last night is more traveling than I do in a typical week.

That's hilarious. You're 476 feet from everything! Now that's what I call being "right at your doorstep".

Not even considering it that way, I usually do about 35 miles a week including walking. It's 3 miles to work, I have friends in the neighborhood, and I can get most groceries in one area or the other. It's nice but going to the sticks for Nintendo games is less convenient.

The way some people throw around the word "mint" is just ridiculous.

Update.

TL;DR: I have a console and a good handful of games now. There are more titles I want, but what I have so far could easily keep me busy for a while.

The temptation carried over from emulation to press a speed up button, but it quickly went away. This might be kool-aid but I am now fully in agreement with people who say there is nothing like playing the original hardware.

Too long, did read:

OK. So I've been to twelve different thrift stores, three pawn shops, three specialty game stores that carry vintage stuff, and a used book store that also happens to get old games. I have found nothing at thrift or pawn. There is one store* that has some good electronics--I got a video camera there once--so I think it has more of a chance to get what I'm after more than others and I will hit it up periodically. But none of them are located somewhere that I could easily check every week.

At
one of the specialty stores, I got Super Mario 2 CIB. Aside from that, not a single game I got at these places works. I am pretty pissed off about that. I used q-tips and 99% isopropyl alcohol before trying them
but obviously it didn't do the job. I will be ordering a security bit to take the carts apart and do a deep clean. I hope that improves things. I lost the receipt from one of the stores unfortunately. I was there about two weeks ago and just got the console yesterday (yes, I got ahead of myself somewhat. Stupid.)

Speaking of the console, I got a top loader. I read extensively about the advantages and disadvantages to make this decision. It's not nearly as cool as the front loader, but apparently it just works better. And it is really kind of funny looking. Of course I saw lots of pictures ahead of time, but nothing
prepared me for how it looks in person. I will also deep clean the console just in case. After testing some non-working or glitchy games last night I am paranoid that I have infected it with dirt, and the good
games will get dirty, and soon nothing will work. Like a Zip drive with the click of death.

No matter how much I read, it seems there is always more. I decided on the top loader after reading many times that
it has not A/V out, only RF. I figured, we used RF when I was a kid, and it was fine. Well it wasn't until a week after I ordered that I found out the RF is actually different (and worse) than on the original model.
Oh well. If it really bugs me I'll do a mod or get a front loader next year. But I'm pretty sure it won't too much.

I found a couple of people on craigslist that have lots of games and have them cheap. Of
course, they are both pretty far away. As I think I said before one is almost in Wisconsin. Getting there will take two hours each way. In hindsight it would have been better to go there than spend two whole
days visiting various thrift stores in the city...but now I know.

Needless to say, any more games that I buy in person, I will insist on a test before paying, including those far-away places. If I am just grabbing a couple for a couple bucks that's another story, but any armloads or $5+ carts will require a demo before I take them. I have had very good luck with eBay though. Anything that I bought by itself works great. I
haven't fully tested the one lot that I won.

*The one thrift store did have some other things for me. I got an old, very heavy very cool belt sander. And a Mavica (the floppy disc version, duh). And a
very nice-condition copy of the first Calvin and Hobbes book, so I can finally replace my childhood copy (with missing cover and the first five pages colored in with crayons).

It surprises me how difficult it is to find any NES games. Apparently the aftermarket for these is so demanding that people are just eating them up and sticking them on Ebay immediately.

When does Flea Market season begin in Chicago? That'd be my next stop.

I have a vague memory of seeing a NES Action Set in box at a flea market here years ago. No idea what price.

What really gets me is how many auctions there are for lots of terrible games. So many pictures exactly like this:

it
boggles my mind. They clearly take out all the good games and I can't
believe how many copies there are of Silent Service, Platoon, and other
games I never heard of but get universally terrible reviews. Not to
mention game show games, movie adaptations, and sports games but at
least I understand why those exist.

By the way, what in the world in the forum code is it that puts random line breaks in when something is pasted? If I edit such a post, they aren't there in WYSIWYG mode but in source mode they do appear--as actual line breaks, not preceded or indicated by
or
. There, I can usually fix most of them but it's pretty annoying, especially since I'm usually pasting because I went to draft a long post in Notepad.
