The Last House on the Left (2009)
Not bad for a remake. I approve. Had Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham not produced this, it probably wouldn't have been good.
3 1/2 stars.

Bright (2017)
6/10 It's been unfairly savaged by social justice warriors for its shallow racial allegories but Bright is a lot of fun. I liked the action, the world-building, and Joel Edgerton is fantastic. Bright loses points because it seems like it was written by a high school student; big on ideas but not sure what to do with them. The dialogue in particular is really juvenile and the "non-ending" was especially frustrating. Also, they missed an opportunity to call it "Ork Cops." |

Dunkirk (2017)
Mixed feelings on this one. The trailer painted it as this epic, grandiose war flick. I was expecting a Saving Private Ryan level of adrenaline and suspense. This simply didn't deliver it. The scene on the long pier had a few great buildups of "Oh my god, what's about to happen" but then a plane flies by and drops like 3 bombs and that's it. Beautifully shot, decent story but an overall underwhelming experience. If I want to learn about WW2 and gain a greater respect, I'll read about it. I wanted to be entertained and sort of detach the historical horror and enjoy the movie at face value, and this missed the mark. 2.5/5 |

Tekken 2: Kazuya's Revenge
While the battle scenes were good, the story was still weak. Probably not something I'd be willing to watch it again. 2 stars. "Magic can happen to you."

Last weekend, the wife was in the mood for some vampire action, so we started with The Lost Boys. It was the first time I had watched it in about 15 years. It still holds up very well. We then watched Blade. It doesn't age well.
This weekend I believe we will be watching Eddie and the Cruisers and Eddie and the Cruisers 2. www.retroramblings.com

Wonder Woman (2017)
The movie itself wasn't anything more than I'd expect from a super hero(ine) movie. But g-diddly-dam is Gal Gadot gorgeous! 2/5 Movie 7.3/5 Gal Gadot |

The Dark Tower
I expected this film to be absolute crap after having read so many bad reviews. It wasn't nearly as bad as it has been made out to be, so that was a plus. Not great, but still worth watching. 3/5 You love this signature.

Saw All The Money in the World last night. It's an interesting premise for a movie, and beautifully shot, but it's a little too long for it's own good. A long movie needs a compelling script to retain interest in the story, and talented actors to keep you invested in the characters. Nothing against Mark Whalberg or Michelle Williams, but about 3/4 of the way I stopped caring about the events on screen and found myself waiting for the whole thing to wrap up.
Chris Plummer is great though. There's even a brief scene that hints at why his character is the way that he is, and it's too bad that the film didn't expand on that aspect. The women of New Vegas ask me a lot if there's a Mrs. New Vegas. Well, of course there is! You're her. And you're still just as perfect as the day we met.

Sling Blade
Billy Bob Thornton really outdid himself. Heck of a southern drama! 5 stars. "Magic can happen to you."

The Fly (Nineteen Eighty Something)
Man, I watched this movie in fragments on cable growing up. I always remembered the arm wrestling and vomit donuts scene. After sitting through it as an adult, I found it very disturbing and stomach churning to sit through. I felt like Goldblum did a great job as a quirky scientist but the movie really lacked in even remotely explaining the science behind the telepods. I would have loved to have seen Brundle muttering mathematical jargon as he paced around the warehouse instead of just typing into the computer and voila. Good movie, a bit gross but worth a watch. Gina Davis is also a certified retro babe. 2.5/5 "It is alive or is it Memorex?" |
