31091Weird cartoonsWhen I was a little boy men like William Cayton and Fred Ladd took European cartoons and dubbed them in English for baby boomers. &nbsp;Haim Saban of Saban Entertainment did the same thing in the final decade of the 20th century, and I thank him for it.<div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-weight: normal;">Cartoons from outside the USA sure are interesting and Saban searched the world over for anything that might catch-on with kids everywhere.</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><div>I will never forget 1992 and the first time I saw "<span style="font-weight: bold;">Saban's Around the World in Eighty Dreams</span>". A French cartoon from Saban Paris, S.A. mothership. Only the French could make a cartoon this crazy watchable, lol.</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><img src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/-daKHP8nxnY/hqdefault.jpg"><div><br><div style="font-weight: normal;">Try this on for size:</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-weight: normal;">On an enchanted tropical island lives a big guy named Carlos with his friend Oscar the Parrot. Each episode features three children who have befriended Carlos and Oscar because the two always have an interesting story to share. Carlos loves to tell "tall tales", especially when they concern famous historical characters.</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-weight: normal;">The children, of course, never believe Carlos and Oscar. So to prove he's telling the truth, the whole gang goes over to Grandma Tadpole's house on the other side of the island. Grandma has magical powers that can transport Carlos, Oscar and the children through time where they can meet all the famous people Carlos swears are his close, personal friends.</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-weight: normal;">Yes, Carlos is making it all up and when he and the kids get into trouble because of his "stories", Carlos has the ability to transform into a bull and "bulls" his way out of every sticky situation his stories gets him into.</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-weight: normal;">What fascinated me was Grandma Tadpole. Her magic required a small amount of water that was still, not moving. A glass, a mug, a sink or even a spoonful - as long as the water was still she could use it as a dimensional doorway through time and space.</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div><div style="font-weight: normal;">I also like the intro theme music. Only the English version was done in a reggae style with a delightful chorus of children singing back-up. No one has posted the full version of the US intro but here is the only clip I can find on YouTube:</div><div style="font-weight: normal;"><br></div> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-daKHP8nxnY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>eddstarrApr 17, 2016View
31090Forgotten CartoonsI'm glad you remember the "Back to the Future" cartoon series cuz it brings up something I once heard on "Sneak Previews" with Gene Cisco and Roger Ebert.<div><br></div><div>Roger said, "animation is expensive enough that when you green light an animated series you better have a good reason to do it".</div><div><br></div><div>For, "Back to the Future", the reason is clear. Animation makes special effects more numerous and spectacular without the hassles incurred in a live action project. So why did the Back to the Future cartoon spend so much time at home with the family?</div><div><br></div><div>I didn't want a cartoon about family life, I wanted Time Travel and lots of it. I wasn't the only one, I don't remember the cartoon series doing well only lasting one or two seasons. And it was only picked up later as reruns because of the famous movie by the same name.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>TV cartoons based on movies always change the storyline, I guess they have to. A movie is a coherent story whereas television shows are episodic. Another reason may be the goal of having a TV show "stand on its own" without using the movie as a crutch to lean on.</div><div><br></div><div>I never found any fans of "Highlander: The Animated Series" from 1995. In the Seattle area, Highlander aired Saturday mornings at 7am. I think the sweet spot for SatAM cartoons is &nbsp;9am to 10am. The first cartoon of the day usually pulls weak ratings with only a fraction of the audience tuned in.</div><div><br></div><div>I liked this cartoon very much. Too bad it didn't last beyond one or two seasons.</div><div><br></div> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xUlEamQJ-1g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><div><br></div><div><img src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/BZ97_x4JbLk/hqdefault.jpg"></div>eddstarrApr 17, 2016View

The album the song comes from was released in 1972 and the only reason I remember it was my mom - it was her favorite song that year. I hesitate to post this because the reaction is usually not good, guys usually laugh at me. 31087M. Night Shyamalan brings back Tales from the Crypt<blockquote rel="Vaporman87"><b>Vaporman87 wrote :</b><br><i> Well, this is a step in the right direction, but I don't understand why they would want this to be an ongoing story instead of new tales every episode. That doesn't make sense to me. </i><b>-end quote</b></blockquote>I've read several articles on the topic, and it seems the show may in fact have shifted gears into an anthology format. I wonder if they changed their minds because of negative fan reaction. In any event, we may be getting something closer to the HBO series than originally planned.SupermanApr 17, 2016View
