Yes, I'm reviving this old Retrojunk thread on this site. Originally started by former retrojunkie, TurboDuo, it was a way to give gamers on the site a way to keep themselves up to date with the latest games released on through the retro gaming service that's being sold on the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U and 3DS. And after hearing what's been going on with the Virtual Console service for both systems, as well as some upcoming games (The Legend of Zelda Oracle series as well as Earthbound), then I think it would be fun to discuss it on this thread.

So now, let's kick things off with this week's Virtual Console release. There's only one game this week, and it was actually released yesterday.

Week of 4/17/2013

Wii U Virtual Console:

Kirby's Adventure (NES)
30 Points

Basically, Kirby's Adventure is released as part of Nintendo's trial campaign to release games that was previously on the Wii Virtual Console, and upgrade them for the Wii U as part of the launch of the system's new Virtual Console service. Kirby's Adventure is what's being released this week, and it's continuing at their discounted price up until the next game is released (Super Metroid).

Ah. Kirby! You have to love the little puffball. But your mention of the Super Metroid release really makes me smile. I still have that one, complete and in box. Such a great game.

Yup, Super Metroid's set to be released on the Wii U Virtual Console on May 15 on the discounted 30 points. After the month of that game ends, then it will start selling at the usual 800 points. The following months after Super Metroid is when they'll release Yoshi for June and Donkey Kong for July.

Why do they only do one or two games at a time, I hate it.

Probably because they don't want to release too many games at once. They did, at one point, release 2-3 games each week on the Wii Virtual Console, and they've been slowing down ever since.

Two or three is still not enough. This "trickle" method, I think they think it will be exciting "oh super mario is finally up" but it has a disappointing, opposite effect for me. Why should I have to wait for them to deign to release the games I want when they are 20-30 years old? This is essentially emulation; it's not like there are technical obstacles to be overcome. Rights issues I could see, but a) those are easy to resolve for them and b) Nintendo would not even do all of theiir own games at once so clearly that's not the issue.

I'm sorry to be negative but they really flubbed the whole thing imo. Killed great excitement I had and lost any sales from me.

My main gripe about the 3DS Virtual Console is how they've been releasing a set of NES games that's already on the Wii Virtual Console. I personally think Nintendo should have some kind of crossplay between the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Console services so that you can play the games either on the main system and the handheld. Though, that probably won't happen considering how Nintendo likes to re-release everything constantly to the point where they would charge people again for the new games. I mean, I already payed for the Castlevania trilogy on the Wii Virtual Console. I don't want to do the same thing with the 3DS system.

But then again, the Wii U Virtual Console games is allowing you to play on your Wii U gamepad. So, if I ever do get the Wii U and upgrade the games I already downloaded that's on the Wii U Virtual Console, then what would it matter if it's on the 3DS Virtual Console?

Well, at least the 3DS Virtual Console will have the Legend of Zelda Oracle games for the Game Boy Color that will be released in the coming weeks. That's something I'd recommend for those who don't have the original cartridge.

I have had the Wii for years but never one time purchased anything or the virtual console. I still have many of the games I would want anyway.

Well, Nintendo is setting up the official launch of the Wii U Virtual Console. There's a small list of games that they're releasing for the official launch, but I'll post that when they actually release it, which is said to be sometime this week, but I'm not so sure.

However, here is what we got this week for April 25, 2013.

3DS Virtual Console:

Mega Man 4 (NES)
$4.99

So, basically, it's part of the continuing run of Crapcom releasing Mega Man 1-6 on the 3DS Virtual Console each month until the entire series is released. Yeah, yeah, that's nice and all, Crapcom, but what about the Game Boy Mega Man games. They still have not released any of the Mega Man GB games after Dr. Wily's Revenge.

Plus, Mega Man 4 was when the series started to get stale, which was something I brought up in my review.
