Apparently, I haven't taken Hyperkin seriously enough. I want this!
Ten consoles in one. This thing will play carts from NES, Famicom, Super NES and Famicom, Sega Master System, Genesis and Mega Drive, and Game Boy original, Color and Advance. I only really care about the bolded ones. [Gameboy Color plays GB original carts, so I don't really count that as separate...] Still. Four consoles for $99, with the chance to try out the Sega systems if I want, and maybe a couple Japanese Nintendo carts if I should come across any. This rules!

Benjanime are you sure this can't? While trying to find out what games are affected by that, I read that one can just disable the chip in the console, and then the games will work. And if I read correctly, the lockout was mainly for region control; if RetroN 5 can play Super/Famicom games, then there's no problem?
Hyperkin has this to say about it: Because we have created a new chipset, it allows us to ensure that region locks and compatibility are no longer an issue, and the RetroN 5 will play both PAL and NTSC cartridges. CIC lockout chips and FX chips are no longer going to be an issue, as we aim to achieve 100% compatibility with all cartridges. |
