Having watched the movie a second time now, I'm convinced they made the right choice with the limited on screen action with the monsters. It will make next time (with Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan) that much more satisfying.

As far as Cranston goes, I would have liked to have seen him last longer, but I'm not sure how that would work moving the plot along. He had pretty much served his purpose up to that point.
