I think Bernadette Peters (voice and singing voice of Rita.) wanted Warner Bros. to extend her salary. I really liked Bernadette's singing voice. Rita and Runt was a cartoon gem the like of which we may never see again. This was the segment that signaled to anyone with cartoon chops, "the guys at the WB know what they're doing!". Amen to that.
