Apparently making a longer list is no problem. "Favorite" seems to have a loose definition these days, people throw it around to mean anything they like. Just look at the top of this page--really, Batman, Returns, and Forever all rated equally? Clerks and Clerks 2? All the Toy Stories? I understand loving a franchise but there are concessions to be made if quality is up for discussion.

I had to cut a lot of awesome flicks to make it down to ten. I feel remiss entirely omitting the Coen brothers and John Waters, as well as a slew of genre films. But limits are important for the sake of coherence. Lists cannot go on forever.

Here's what I'm calling my top ten (in order of release), with my top five bolded:

Metropolis (1926)
Dr Strangelove (1964)
Eraserhead  (1977)
Heavy Metal (1981)
Critters (1986)
Short Circuit 2 (1988)
The Fifth Element (1997)
Pi (1998)
Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
There Will Be Blood (2007)

I would never have guessed anyone's top ten would include Eraserhead AND Critters.
