I'm a cart pusher at Wal-Mart. I reach my 13-year anniversary at the store next month, and I'm planning on training to be a cashier. I've been pushing carts since I was 19 years old (I'm 32 now), and I want to have the skill of cashiering if I ever leave the store.

Having worked anywhere for that long in today's economy is quite an accomplishment. People always rag on working retail, but if you're a good worker its a great way to move on up the chain of command.

I got a new job a little over a month ago, so I figured I'd update my listing on here.

I work at a hospital in a new hybrid position that doesn't really have a name. Part of the time I work the radiology front desk checking people in. Some days I work in the mammogram file room scanning old films and turning them digital. The a good majority of my time is spent in the radiology reading room, which is where the actual radiologists sit and read the studies. That position is called a Reading Room Coordinator, but I think you can call it being a receptionist since all I do is answer phones and get doctors on the phone. Then finally, I work as a transporter moving patients from the emergency department to CT on busy nights and weekends.

I'm a system analyst for the City of Buffalo. I support the city's permitting and code enforcement system, both in-house and online.

At first I hated it. Doctors tend to be egotistical jerks, so having them bark orders at me all day did not sit well. But, for the most part, I don't have to do much. I just have to be in the room when needed. That gives me time to work on school work or write my contest entries.

I'm digging the transporting the best. I like getting out meeting the people and actually helping people. The shift goes by fast, and when I'm not moving people, I'm just sitting playing on my phone or reading a book. It's the total opposite of retail. No one expects you to clean or stay busy, just do your job.

Sounds like a pretty good gig. And yes, retail can be pretty taxing on the old patience.
