I saw it, very fun movie, a lot of stuff changed from the book, but the heart is still there.

So, I just came back from seeing it, and wanted to give my thoughts while still fresh. To cut to the chase, I really didn't like it and believe me, I wanted to LOVE it. The book itself was honestly a shallow story, but the pop culture stuff boosted it's appeal tons. The movie felt like I was on a slip and slide and little nuggets of gold were hanging above me and I had to grab what I could before the film ended. Overall it had a few awesome scenes, but not much else. Kinda felt like eating your favorite pizza but with warm coke. |

vkimo wrote :Damn! I really enjoyed the book, but had some issues with the storytelling like when the action flatlines in between gates and the Wargames/Monty Python sections. I haven't seen the movie yet, but heard that they made a major change to one of the gates, something that you may or may not be able to overlook, if you catch my hint. How was that part? |

SOME SPOILERS! The movie could have used a lot more 80s music I feel. The beginning race scene with Van Halen's Jump was awesome! The final battle scene was very underwhelming, but it was cool when the Say Anything reference with Parzival holding the boombox and Twisted Sister was blasting out as the armies clashed. The end credits had Hall and Oates "You make my dreams come true" playing. While that song is awesome, I felt it was just thrown out there as a toe tapper to make you feel good as you left the movie. I did like how they changed Sorrento into an older guy, it made the storyline more formulaic but it made more sense story wise. Artemis was totally miscast IMO. She just...wasn't cute. They're meeting in person in the book was a HUGE deal. In the movie, Wade gets kidnapped be one of Artemis' friends and they pull a bag off his head and blam, there she is, done. Didn't feel right. Aech was well cast, as well as the Japanese dudes no one remembers haha |

Just got back from seeing the movie. My initial thoughts are simple: It wasn't a "great" movie. But it was an extremely "fun" movie. One of those movies that you would watch every time it was on television if the show you were looking for wasn't on. A movie that you grab from your collection to watch whenever you just can't decide what you're in the mood for. The kind of film you could watch over and over just because it was really enjoyable stuff. That perfectly describes Ready Player One. In other news regarding RPO, Ernie Cline is working on a sequel book. It's Tomatometer rating has dropped 10 points, but as a nostalgia nerd and movie fan, I can't recommend it enough. In the interest of disclosure, I never read the book. So I had no frame of reference going into it, and that may make a big difference in how people feel about the movie. You love this signature.
