| 3191 | Article | fuschnikt | Love this. I can relate to hand-me-down toys and Goodwill clothes. My parents saved money wherever they could. Now-a-days, our church does the giving tree thing, too. Every year my family grabs two, a boy and a girl. At our church it is pretty anonymous, so inviting anybody to dinner would be out of the question. Sometimes I wonder what the reaction would be to the gifts we put together. Mostly, though, I'm just happy to be giving. Sometimes it's as simple as a tag on one at the local grocer. Other times, it's church that is handling the exchange. Never have I heard of actually inviting the recipient to dinner at home. LOL It's funny that one side of your family had 14 children, considering my mom came from a family of 13. They sure did pump out the kids back in their day, huh? I like that you include all the ways that you are incorporating some old traditions from your childhood into your own children's lives. That is something I can completely relate to, as I do the same thing. Sure, you get enjoyment out of continuing tradition, but you're mostly seeking to give your children the same joy that you KNOW they will experience in the same way you experienced it. Personally my favorites are the Christmas Vacation tree and the tree from a Charlie Brown Christmas. Both really great trees and stories. I am fond of the Gremlins tree. I also remember being traumatized with the Simpsons episode where Bart burns down the tree, I just had these horror visions of catching trees on fire.
