Retro Holiday Recipes
Now this one is certainly one of my favorites, as it features the always delicious snack, Bugles! It also features Whistles and Daisy's, but they are no longer on the market, so we just have to settle for what we can get. As much as I love Bugles, I am more than a bit disappointed I missed out on ever trying the other two offerings.
I'm not so sure about the dip though. Cream Cheese, Blue Cheese, and onions mixed with Cheddar and other stuff doesn't sound too appealing to me. Maybe it does you.
We'll start at the top of the page here, and work our way down. Now while I have been know to enjoy a slice of fried Spam or two in my time, I don't believe I've ever worked up the courage to combine it with melted cheddar and a slice of cranberry sauce on toast. Oh, and mustard. There's mustard on there somewhere.
The Hors d'Oeuvre balls made with Spam spread is most certainly out of the question for me. That looks kind of disgusting actually. Mixing it with onion soup mix and cream cheese before rolling it in paprika does not sound like a party to me.
Now at the bottom of the page...who doesn't love a big ol' flaming ham? Just like Mom used to make. That Cure 81 brand ham is still in stores, and I can attest to it's deliciousness. The recipe for the Cheery Cherry Ham Glaze is a must though. And heck, if you're going that far, don't forget to pick up some brandy so you can get that sucker on fire!
I know oranges played a bigger part in Christmases past, but to some folks, they are still a wonderful Christmas treat. The recipes here for the punch and floating ice ring just might be a part of my spread this holiday season.
Who don't love rice? And ol' Uncle Ben has been cooking it up for years and really knows what he's doing. The recipe at the top for Wild Rice Holiday Casserole looks pretty great actually. The wild rice, cream of chicken, mushrooms, parsley, and shrimp would make a fine dinner, and not just for the holidays.
Wesson oil gets in on the act here with their recipe for fruit cake. I know fruit cake is probably one of the most maligned foods on the planet, but I've found a simple mantra to be true when dealing with fruit cake. When it's good, it's GOOD. When it's not, it's not. There's not much a middle ground with me and fruit cake.
My goodness that recipe looks like it makes some rich fudge! I wonder if it would be any good with Splenda instead of sugar. Just kidding. Give me the hard stuff. Seriously though, I wonder if this makes a softer fudge, or the classic hard fudge of years gone by. I just might have to whip this up and see.
That just about does it, but I've got one more for you before I go.....
It's almost mind-boggling to think that the recipe clipping above is 50 years old this month. Well, it is for me anyway. I know Rice Krispie Treats, or Marshmallow Treats as they're called here, have been around my whole life, but I'm still amazed at just how long they've been around, and they're still going strong. I have to say, these treats have always been the homemade goodie I look forward to most at Christmas time. Of course, my Mom's are a little different. She always puts too much butter (is there such a thing?) in them, causing them to not hold together. You have to dish them out in a bowl and eat them with a fork. I kinda like 'em that way.
If you've got a family party this year for Christmas, really surprise everyone and take something you've seen here.

Would've really been a special article if you had actually made the food. Some of it doesn't look half bad, even.

Seriously... what goes together better than Spam and the Holiday Season? I can think of nothing more synergistic. LOL
