Things I Loved About the 90s

I was born in the mid 80s, September of 1985 to be exact, but what I remember most about my childhood, is everything 90s. The 90s, by far, was my favorite decade that I have experienced.

First and foremost, the unique 90s fashion:

Exhibit A: Hair Combs

I wore these things until they were completely stretched out. To this day, I'd still wear one if I could find them in the store!

Exhibit B: Body Glitter

I blame the 90s for creating my current addiction to all things shiny. Body glitter was a girl's best friend in the 90s.

Exhibit C: Mood Rings

I think I've always loved these things. I still have one, somewhere, that my first love bought for me, with "Princess" inscribed around the band. Because, you know.. princesses wear mood rings, and such. For whatever reason, however, all of mine would only cycle through two different colors... black and blue.

Exhibit D: JNCO Jeans

I was never much of a fan of this trend. I've always been a skinny jeans kind of girl. Even in the 90s.. and people made fun of me for wearing skinny jeans, while everyone else had jeans that would fit several people inside of them. Now, of course, skinny jeans are the thing. Back then, not so much.

Exhibit E: Arm Cuffs

I actually had plenty of these in the 90s. It's one trend that I would actually love to see making a comeback. Apparently, I'm the only one that thinks they're cute. :)

Next up.. TV

SNICK was probably one of my favorite things in life. It aired between the hours of 8 and 10 every Saturday night on Nickelodeon from August 15, 1992, until August 28, 2004.

Because of Snick, we had wonderful shows such as..
  • Clarissa Explains It All
  • Are You Afraid Of the Dark?
  • Adventures Of Pete & Pete
  • Secret World Of Alex Mack
  • Ren & Stimpy
  • All That
  • Kenan & Kel
TV today.. just ISN'T the same.

Then, there's the music.

I still have plenty of 90s themed playlists on my Spotify, today. I can't get enough. Everything from Nirvana, to The Offspring, Blink-182, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morrissette, Goo Goo Dolls, Jewel.. the list goes on, and on. If I could pick a time period in which I could only listen to that style of music for the rest of my life.. I'd definitely choose any and everything from the 90s.

Lastly, we have the food..

I remember, when I was a kid, my dad would always bring me home unusual snacks and drinks from our local stores in my hometown. This is something I truly miss about my childhood. Today, nothing really compares to the unusual (but tasty) treats we had back then!

A few that I remember and miss the most:
  • Orbitz
  • Doritos 3D
  • Ecto-Cooler
  • Melody Pops
  • Tongue Splashers
  • Smash Bubblegum Packs
There are obviously too many to mention, but the food, snacks, and drinks, of the 90s were pretty delicious. I'm glad that a few have made a comeback, recently, such as Surge drinks, which you can find almost anywhere in my area, now.

Hope you guys have enjoyed reading about how much I miss the 90s! Leave a comment letting me know what you loved most about that time period!

I agree with you on loving the 90s. I was born in 1986 so I'm right there with you. I love the music from the 90's. It all sounded different. Each artist had their own sound and it was amazing. I miss SNICK. I used to watch it every Saturday night. Hands down happy that Nick bought the Splat around. Those were the days.

I loved everything in this article except the jeans, and good thing that Nickelodeon is having yet another 90s block soon, so safe to say that there are some good in the new millennium, even if it's a revival, but yeah, SNICK will always be in my heart :)

I miss Doritos 3D so much, they were the best. I used to buy body glitter at Claire's and put it everywhere xD I had a grape one that I was obsessed with. I miss being able to shamelessly cover myself in glitter.

Congrats on your first article! I hope you'll continue to submit; this was great! While I can't relate to the fashion stuff, I will wholeheartedly get behind you when it comes to SNICK. I LOVED it! That was probably the first "block" of shows I ever watched, without fail, every single week (except maybe Saturday morning cartoons).

I think a lot of the 90s trends are making a comeback (the tattoo chockers, etc.). Some of them I'd still wear today, but some.. not so much, haha. I'm really hoping the excessively wide legged jeans do not make a comeback. My most dreaded aspect of that time period, is when my mother would perm my hair. I rocked the curly hair for so long, that I think my hair permanently became curly. It's still wavy to this day, but it was straight before she permed it.

Nice reference to hair combs. Those were so big in the 90s and a bunch of girls wore those at my high school. I personally never wore those though.

I used to buy massive amounts of body glitter, but I didn't use it on my body. I would always put it in my hair. I liked the glitter that game in a roller ball applicator like perfume or lip gloss.

I think the fashion mistake that I am most haunted by came in the 90's with my love of always wearing pleated, whitewashed jeans. Yeah, they were pretty dreadful. Sometimes they even had the band at the bottom of the legs that made them wrap tightly around your ankle, like a pair of sweatpants. Given what I see people wearing nowadays though, it wouldn't surprise me if some version of this became popular.
