A Christmas wishlist of the '90s

Throughout many a year of my childhood my requests for Christmas gifts would pile up from seeing different products coming out of the 1990s, but the chances of getting them were hit or miss. Here's a listing of a handful of things I wanted during the holidays through the years.


Light-up shoes



Oozing with '90s appeal, going to school and seeing a kid walk around with these on always made me jealous. I was only in second grade when I first saw them and they became a trend for quite a while. My parents on the other hand thought they were a waste of money so I was stuck with regular street shoes.


Ren & Stimpy Show VHS tapes


My parents surprisingly allowed my siblings and I to watch this show whenever it aired, considering its gross out humor and bizarre episodes. By the time '94 was rolling around I was starting to see VHS tapes of various episodes of the show. While I didn't get them as gifts, I got a couple of them as stocking stuffers.


Magna Doodle



My interest in art lead me to want one of these, and it was a good choice as far as mom was concerned, since she didn't have to worry about me wasting paper or having to clean eraser shavings. This didn't stop me from doodling in school however, but it was still a good way of passing the time if I wasn't allowed to have anymore time with the TV.


Yak Bak


Much like the Talkboy, Yak Bak was a more compact voice and sound recorder that let you change the pitch of your recordings making for some hilarious results. I got one of these and used the heck out of it until the battery ran dry. It made for some fun times.


Game Boy Color


Although I did eventually get one (preowned, anyway) the GBC had to have been my most wanted item from 1998. It still didn't have a backlit screen, but just going to stores like Target and Wal-Mart and seeing the different games being playable in kiosks had me wanting it so much more. Even the Game Boy Camera was out at the time!


Pok'emon trading cards


Speaking of the '98 year, I always wanted to get my hands on some of the Pok'emon cards that came in starter sets with over 60 different cards as well as a bonus foil card. Thing was though, for its steep price of around $30 a pop my parents weren't easily convinced to get these for me. Much like the light up shoes, they saw no point in buying them since the only kids I knew who did buy them were the ones I knew in my school classes, and the trading card game would later get banned from schools for kids trading their cards in the middle of cafeteria breaks.

You had good taste in the 90s. I totally had that clear model of YakBak and used it in my imaginary secret agent adventures as an all purpose device of deception. Glad you eventually got your GameBoy. I learned early on that if I could wait a year or two I would often find my most desired toys at garage sales for cheap and end up with more than if I had begged for them when new. A habit I continue with to this day.

We had a Toys R Us catalog one year and I wrote down a list of the things in it I wanted, hoping Santa would bring them. And I wrote down a LOT lol.

Seems like a very decade appropriate list. Probably the only item I had from this list was the GameBoy Color.
