I've never heard this. Perhaps if you're expelled, that could be a real possibility, since you're expelled for the whole year (or at least, a good chunk of it.)

That must've been what I've really heard.

Being suspended out of school and having to automatically flunk the grade sounds a little too unfair.

There were a few kids in my high school class that ended being put back in the same grade the next year. Thankfully none of them were my friends, because that would have really sucked.
