Two classic Pokemon games come to the Virtual Console. Sweet.

I missed the part about Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow being only transferred to Sun and Moon and not X/Y/OR/AS. Kind of dumb that they're not making it transferable to X and Y. Then again, I'm guessing they're trying to make Sun and Moon more enticing for people to get.

Following the recent Nintendo Direct... this week brings in something special for the 3DS Virtual Console... or rather the New 3DS as we now have another classic system that's being offered on there for the first time ever. This is the week of March 3, 2016.

Wii U Virtual Console:

Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures (SNES)
$7.99

New 3DS Virtual Console:

Super Mario World (SNES)
$7.99

F-Zero (SNES)
$7.99

Pilotwings (SNES)
$7.99

This is a pretty bittersweet addition. It was announced following the recent Nintendo Direct that SNES games are now being offered for the first time for the 3DS... or rather, the New 3DS. Yeah, I understand that people are upset that they cannot play the games on the original 3DS hardware, but I understand why Nintendo is making it exclusive to the New 3DS. It's because the original 3DS' hardware does not emulate SNES games properly. It's a bit of a double-edge sword, but I do think it's one of the only ways to get SNES games to be released on the 3DS. Though, I already have a New 3DS system, and I haven't really seen much of a reason to buy SNES games on the system. Maybe when Earthbound comes out?

One thing the SNES games on 3DS does have is a pixel-perfect mode. It basically sets the resolution to the original resolution that SNES games were made for. The video output signals that the original hardware would use actually stretches the resolution on the TV screen. The original, unstretched resolution is very common for SNES emulators to use, and that option is now available on the New 3DS Virtual Console. Personally, I prefer the stretched TV resolution... but whatever floats your boat.

There's more SNES games coming at the end of March and the middle of April. One thing I hope Nintendo does is include a crossbuy option. Hopefully, something that they would incorporate through the My Nintendo Account system. Because I doubt people who bought SNES games on Wii U would be willing to repurchase them again for the New 3DS.

Week of 3/10/2016:

Wii U Virtual Console:

Mega Man Battle Network 6: Cybeast Falzar (GBA)
$6.99

Mega Man Battle Network 6: Cyber Gregar (GBA)
$6.99

With that, the entire Mega Man GBA library is now on the Wii U Virtual Console, and it ends with the final game in the Mega Man Battle Network series. Yes, much like the classic series for the NES, Capcom seems it was appropriate to end the series with the magic number of 6. Of course, there's also the Mega Man Starforce series for the DS that's essentially a successor to Battle Network.

Though one thing that I find interesting about Battle Network 6 is that the Japanese version of the game had a bit of a crossover with the Japanese-only game, Shin Bokura no Taiyou: Gyakushuu no Sabata.... otherwise known as Bokura 3. But because the first to Bokura games got low sales outside Japan, then the third game was never released overseas. For that, all Bokura references was removed in the localized version of Mega Man Battle Network 6.

Week of 3/17/2016:

Wii U Virtual Console:

Dig Dug II (NES)
$4.99

City Connection (NES)
$4.99

Even though the Famicom version of Dig Dug was released a few times for the Virtual Console in North America... this is Dig Dug II's North American Virtual Console debut. Kind of interesting that the Famicom Dig Dug is the game that's part of the Virtual Console Threepeat club as that game has not been released for the NES in North America.

City Connection is the next entry of the Virtual Console Threepeat club. It's nice having the NES version, but it's not the most ideal version of City Connection to play. The arcade version is far superior and is available for the Playstation 4 as part of Hamster's Arcade Archives.

Week of March 24, 2016:

Wii U Virtual Console:

Yoshi's Story (N64)
$9.99

New 3DS Virtual Console:

Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
$7.99

Earthbound (SNES)
$9.99

Super Mario Kart (SNES)
$7.99

Yoshi's Story was a game that I always loathed. As a kid, I remember finding the game annoying as hell... especially when it comes to the Yoshi's singing. Not only that, but it was way too easy. I still don't think very highly of the game now, but I would rather play it than the recent Yoshi's Island sequels that were made by Artoon/Arzest. Now those were awful.

With SNES games on the New 3DS Virtual Console, then the Virtual Console Threepeat club is no longer limited to just NES games. It is kind of a bummer that you can't play these SNES games for the original 3DS... but I do understand why. Nintendo recently stated that the hardware of the New 3DS is able to run SNES games better than it would on the original 3DS... and a lot of people did not believe Nintendo when they said it just because there existed homebrew SNES emulators that ran on the original 3DS. The thing is though... it's not that the original 3DS can't run SNES games... they just don't run them properly. If you run the SNES emulator on the original 3DS, there are certain issues like sound errors and graphical glitches. Granted, they're minor, and don't happen that much, but when it comes to releasing these games officially, Nintendo wants them to run exactly the same way they would on the SNES, so that's why the games are being released on the New 3DS.

It's also nice hearing that games like Earthbound is being released on there. I thought about getting it for the Wii U, but held off on it. Especially since I still own the SNES cartridge. But I might consider the New 3DS Virtual Console release.
