you'd think by the 30th season they'd find that it's the right time to just end the show in general, godforbid harry shearer almost left and that should be a sign.

The Simpsons has definitely run it's course. I tried watching episodes from the more recent seasons, and it's just so god damn boring. I'm sure some of you has heard the term Zombie Simpsons. I wasn't a fan of that label personally, but I feel it applies even more so now than it ever has before. Virtually all of the life that made The Simpsons the fun show it was during the 90s is pretty much gone now. On top of that, I also noticed that there's not a lot of music used in the modern episodes. Even some of the episodes from 2009-2010 still had some of music score the show is known for. Now, it's just beyond stale.

I will say one thing though, it is still better than Family Guy. I'd much rather tolerate The Simpsons at it's current, bland self than the terrible humor Seth MacFarlane puts out.

It's getting to where I won't watch The Simpsons on Sunday nights anymore. I don't really feel like I'm missing anything.

I stopped watching new episodes after the stunt they pulled with Krusty's father's death. I will still watch old episodes, but I refuse to watch another brand new episode until the series finale eventually comes.

The fact that we're all talking about how The Simpsons have run it's course raises an interesting point about the show now and days: who is watching the show at this point? How do they have any viewers at all?

My dad was amongst one of the people who still watched the show. That was, before he began developing dementia (that is a very long, unfortunate story ). I think most of the show's viewers are either younger people who don't really know about The Simpsons in it's heyday, people who watch it alongside Family Guy, or people who just watch it for the sake of nostalgia. They may not care if the show is still good or not, just watching The Simpsons Sunday nights on FOX can be enough to fill that nostalgic feeling of watching it back in the day. Even then, I don't think the ratings are very good.

Really, what I think keeps The Simpsons on the air is just the fact that it's really profitable as a franchise. It may not generate the ratings from back in the day, but what keeps it afloat is the merchandise, which sells a lot. A lot of the Simpsons fans that likely buys the merchandise though, would more than likely be a fan of the classic Simpsons episodes, and not so much the new ones. There was also the fact that FXX aired the Every Simpsons Ever marathon a few years ago, which really brought a lot of attention to the series. I'm sure that brought in a lot of ratings and viewers for FOX, as a lot of these episodes that aired, people may not have seen them air on TV in years, as before that, most TV markets that would air The Simpsons in syndication would air only the last few seasons at the time. With those revenue streams combined, FOX is able to get away with poor ratings of The Simpsons and keep renewing it, so long as it continues to be profitable through other means.

Here's another take, one that I largely agree with. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/nov/01/apu-simpsons-hero

It's true that Apu is something of a stereotype, and in this age maybe shouldn't be voiced by a white guy. But he's been a character with depth, his heritage has been a serious topic, and he has as realistic a life as any other character on the show.
