So I saw the new Power Rangers film. I went into having an open mind, but honestly I have to say it pretty much sucked. There was so much wrong with it I don't even know where to begin. The designs weren't as bad as many people anticipated when this film was first announced, but it was still pretty awful. The suits were horrible, Goldar looked awful, Rita was designed badly, the Megazord looked like crap, and Alpha was just a joke. I actually liked the new Zordon design, and I thought the Puttie's looked decent.

The story and characters felt dumb as well. It seemed less like the Power Rangers and more like Degrassi TNG as a sci-fi show (seriously, one ranger was autistic and another was dealing with "coming to terms" with her "sexuality"? What does any of that that have to do with Power Rangers?)

I'll give this "The Force Awakens" treatment and hold off absolute judgement until I see where the rest of the films go. As of right now though, the outlook is not good in my humble opinion.

That reminds me of when the "Power Rangers" would make appearances at local supermarkets. My neighbors met them. Those "Power Rangers" gave out photocopied autographs that they had made from their Universal Studios appearance in early 1994. This one time my cousin met the White Ranger who looked like a guy in a motorcycle helmet.

A lot of my friends are saying it's really good. I'll be seeing it this week at some point.

I never wanted to watch Power Rangers. The show came out here right when I felt like I was too old to care about kiddie shows like that. Ultraman was onSaturday mornings before that and I tried but didn't understand it. Now that I'm approaching middle age and appreciating low budget stuff I never experienced in original runs, like Jem and the Holograms or Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot, I'm kind of interested. How should I approach the series?

Well most people would probably say to go up to the film and ask something simple, like "Do you come here often?", but for Power Rangers I would go a different route. Try strutting toward it, giving off a confident vibe, and randomly make forceful poses. Then to break the ice, just offer the film a drink and let it know that you know who it is, and that you've always been a fan and wondered where it's been. It's a sure thing after that, trust me.

Approaching Power Rangers when you didn't watch it as a kid is kind of a weird subject. Obviously MMPR was the corniest of the bunch because it came first, so you might want to start there and work your way through each season of the show (all are available on Neflix or DVD), so you can see how the show evolved over time.

Or I would also recommend maybe just skipping around and watch certain seasons of the show instead, the better ones. After Power Rangers: In Space, the show stopped having each season be continued from the previous one. so you wouldn't be missing out on a continuing story. Instead, there would also be a brand new set of characters, brand new powers, brand new villains and just a brand new setting and theme, just like what happens in the sentai that Power Rangers is based off of. The only continuation is usually an annual "team up" episode where the teams from the current and previous season team up for one or two episodes. Or even an anniversary special if it's an anniversary season of the show.

Some seasons I would personally recommend: In Space (though that has a story going into it from the previous seasons), Lost Galaxy and Lightspeed Rescue (other fans are more divisive on those two), Time Force, Dino Thunder, SPD, and RPM.

Dino Charge is really good. Skip Megaforce and Super Megaforce, it is horrible.

I just watched Linkara's "History of Power Rangers" installment on the two Megaforce seasons last week. For such a short and small season at face value, he really went into long, great rants about why this season was terrible.

In Power Rangers related news, it got beat at the box office by Beauty and the Beast. While it took a good chunk of money in, it's got a long way to go before it makes a decent profit.
