It looks like the original RoboCop film is getting a sequel?

So I have to wonder, are they writing this as a direct sequel to the first film and ignoring the sequels that followed it in the late '80s/early '90s?

I'm not sure why they're doing this, but I like it.

I guess they want everyone to forget the films after Robocop '87.
