The prelude to Autumn

In the span of only a few months, the summer season is over. We've had our fill of a vacation in the heat, but it's back to the drawing board of going back to school as the temperatures outside slowly start to go down, or, maybe they've already gone down depending on the area you lived in.

For me, fall has always been a great season to look forward to, while it was nice having my break from school before, the temperatures were welcomed as I went outside a bit more during the weekends.

Sure I had the work of raking up leaf piles, but afterward I put them in an empty oil drum with my older brother and had them burned.

Bagging up leaves was an exception of something I was looking forward to, having little of an attention span as a kid I would have rather gone out to do something fun, but the faster I got it over with, the more time I had to do what I wanted outside. With the woods in my area also having some leaves laid around the ground, it added to the serenity of exploring in such a quiet location, and all that was heard was the chirps of the bugs.

As it got closer to November I began wearing a beanie and a windbreaker jacket, preparing for the true cold. During this time of the season, it was a little harder dealing with waiting on the school bus. In my earlier years, my mom would only drive me to the bus stop and leave me in the car if we had pouring rain, but if it was clear or overcast weather, I had to sit out and wait.

The only real downside to my leisure of having fun outside was either having those outside chores to do, or most of my weekdays being taken up from going to school, being squandered from both.

Before I knew it, winter was coming. Here in Virginia though snowfall could only be a rare case, sometimes we'll get a few inches of snow with it just melting a few days after, or, maybe no snow at all during the year, but those brisk temperatures could still be there.

One of the first times of experiencing a real winter was when I visited my uncle in the state of Indiana, well over several hours in travel from where I was. It could get as cold as 15 degrees or lower, and there would be at least a few feet of snow staying there for the remainder of our days visiting, and I loved it.

Our arrivals to Indiana usually looked like this

With the following winter season among us, the day of gathering leaves may have been over, but I had the warm spring to look forward to next, but not before my excitement for Christmas, and thus this is where my story ends.

Me and especially my mom felt really good in the fall. It's our favorite season. The mists and cold of autumn are very reminiscent of Holland, the country my mom descends from, which is why she feels so good and likes autumn so much. And I feel an indescribable sense of peace and belonging.

Reading your touching article makes me want to have you as my childhood friend back then. I would have been a much happier child for sure. Thank you for your always well written articles, privileged vocabulary and exciting text. I love you. ❤
