Risky business: Summer activities

When you're stuck playing outside during your childhood, what goes through your mind as a means of having fun? Do you play it easy and just bring out toys and action figures? Or do you dare to try something to get you in trouble? I was the kid that did both, and today I'll be talking about some outside activities that ranged from getting a simple warning, to getting grounded.

I was at age 10 when I was curious to try these new ways of making my summer days more interesting, and with the company of a friend that also supported the ideas, we were both in for some parental discipline down the road. My earliest memory was going out to an abandoned shed somewhere in the neighborhood, then my friend and I layered two mattresses on top of each other in front of it, as we climbed on the roof of the shed and jumped off to land on them.

This wasn't the actual shed, just using an example of its size and how it looked by memory.

After about a good half hour of this, a concerned neighbor watched from his house window and called our parents. It wasn't enough for our butts to get whooped, but I did get a brief week of being grounded.

Behind the neighborhood of the mobile home park where I was living at the time was some woods, in which me and my friend would usually revisit on occasion. Part of the area we'd never been to was a road leading to some train tracks, and we decided to follow the path.

The tracks took us quite a length of miles down of walking and we were possibly out there for a good couple of hours. The sun was baking us, and my friend suggested we head back since we had no water bottles with us. Finally arriving back we were greeted to our parents with intimidated looks on their faces as if they also had their arms crossed and again, we were grounded for some time.

One summer day afternoon my friend was absent from me as he had a family visit and one of the homes near the entrance of the mobile home park was also home to another kid I knew, not a friend but more so an acquaintance. The water from the water nozzle outside was left on, and I just went crazy with spraying the water, even getting some on her and her friend.

It was another obvious moment that one of the neighbors spotted me and ratted me out, and without my friend being there I just easily confessed about it and took my one week of being grounded.

Did you have any outside activities that were enough to get you in trouble back in the day? Leave a comment and as always, see you next article!

@Benjamine, he was clearly sarcastic with you in that "question" and you didn't notice his poison in his sarcasm. That man is a monster, period! No wonder nobody likes him. My house is blessed and I will never accept that demon inside my house!!

@julie

i should actually mention, a couple of years ago my stepdad asked me why i didn't have anymore daring days out like this, and i specifically told him it was because of the punishments he gave me, sounding like he didn't need to apologize :/

As we talked about before, I am and will always be against punishment. Punishment, beating, none of this educates!! On the contrary, it teaches that parents do not love their children!! There are many humanized ways to educate a child, with love as the first and fundamental rule. This is so obvious. I'm not surprised to see children becoming adults and abandoning their parents; this is justified, and it's very sad to see this vicious loop in societies around the world. Too much lack of love results in too much wrong things and it becomes a vicious loop. Children need love from their parents, and this also implies the physical presence of that love from parents to children.

@vaporman

i would have enjoyed the heck out of attempting to swing from vines like tarzan, lol. but i got myself hurt a few times as well, skinning my knees on the ground was common.

@onipar

i would have mentioned it in my article, but i actually revisited the train track path years later when i was in high school and was able to go much farther down than i did all those years ago, even going past downtown, i was gone for about five or so hours.

Ha, this is great! Man, I did so many risky things as a kid. It was rare we got caught or hurt, but it did happen. I would have killed to have train tracks near me as a kid. I just had the subway :-p

Just exploring like usual.

What were you guys doing in the woods? Looking for a body like those kids in Stand by Me? XD

Vaporman87 Posted on Sep 04, 2020 at 03:00 PM

I rarely got in trouble. But I did get hurt doing stupid stuff. Like going down into the woods and swinging from vines, only to lose my grip and land on my back -- knocking the wind out of me real good.

My step-brother at that time had an accident on that same vine. On the back-swing, he smashed into another tree, right in the groin. Ouch. He had to have stitches even. Couldn't wear underwear for a week or two.

Then there were our numerous crashes riding a wagon down the hill leading to our houses.
