A Closer Look At: Cartoon Cartoon Fridays
It's been a long week, school, chores, homework. It all is tiring, so how about you kick back and I'll show you something neat. It's Friday night cartoons afterall. For those that don't know, I'm talking about Cartoon Cartoon Fridays on Cartoon Network. Something that was pretty new and different for cartoon channels.
Cartoon Cartoon Fridays started on June 11th 1999 and it was a showcase of new cartoons from the network, re-runs of their most popular shows, and the occasional movie premiere. Though the block went though many changes throughout it's lifetime. It has gone through four revamps starting in 2000 as it has a 'set' in the style of a white room with the ribbons from the intro scattered about as this introduced the Cartoon Host era. While the 2001 revamp isn't a drastic chsnge, more hosts were added and were rotated around. 2001 also introduced the character Weasel as the host of special events like holiday specials and the Big Pick Weekend 2001.
The Cartoon host format stayed the same through the 2002-2003 season. Notable events were a Halloween theme change to Scaretoon Scaretoon Fright-Days. However on May 16th 2003 the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays from 1999 ended. In it's place was Summer Fridays which was renamed Cartoon Network's Fridays on September 5th of that year. This lasted until October 3rd 2003 as the block made a return with a complete overhaul.
Fridays introduced live action hosts and characters along with a new set. This block had it's own skits as well as edutainment segments. This was also the first time the Fridays block as a whole aired normal series outside of the Cartoon Cartoon collection. In 2005 there was a host change, but it stayed the same outside of schedule changes. In 2006 the set got a revamp to what can be considered a retro themed house. This was also the year musical guests got involved with the block.
Fridays's last official airing was Febuary 23rd 2007 and was replaced by Friday Night Premiere Thunder followed by Fried Dynamite on August 31st 2007. After Fried Dynamite the Friday block have changed out each year. Currently though the block's time slot has been taken over by Adult Swim and has remained that way for years.
While Friday Night Cartoons was a newer trend, the Fridays brand was the longest running Friday night cartoon block there was. While at the tail end it was trying to compete with the likes of the Teenick block on Nickelodeon. It still had its own charm in terms of style. Did it deserve better? To an extent yes though with streaming now it would have became obsolete eventually. The block overall though was nice. It had a good idea and ran with it and that is worth remembering it for.

Sounds really cool. I especially like the sound of the Halloween theme. I totally missed out on this though, being a little too old at the time. I remember my brother (who is younger than me) talking about a couple of these shows, but the only one I ever saw was Courage.

i can't say i was a fan of CCF once they replaced the cartoon hosts with the two live action hosts, but during its earlier years it was one of the best starts of the weekend ever. i was kinda starting to lose interest in the network by 2007 anyway as i didn't find much to watch at the time aside from toonami. speaking of which i'm probably one of the few that hated seeing tom with cartoon eyes lol.
