Pokemania: Pokemon The Movie 2000 Twenty Years Later

With Pokemon being a strong presence since it's beginningsin 1996, it's not a bad thing to look back at what helped make the franchise grow the way it did. Since this year marks twenty years since its release in America. What better way to celebrate than look at one of these being the second movie to come out, Pokemon The Movie 2000.

Released on July 21st 2000 in America with July 17th 1999 release in Japan after the smash hit that was Pokemon The First Movie. Pokemon The Movie 2000 while not a massive box office success like the first film was still grossed more than four times the budget worldwide. The movie's plot tells the story of the four legendary birds Articuno, Moltress, Zapdos, and Lugia as well as how the main character Ash must restore balance to the world due to the chaos thrown between these four Pokemon. As a kid I loved this movie as it was another Pokemon film. As an adult, while it has aged for me to where I won't actively go out of my way to watch it, but I still have a nostalgic love for the film. The Pikachu short still remains as a cute short.

Though just like the last film, promotions were plenty as there were Burger King toys, promotional cards during the film's theatrical run, and even a special on WB with the name being the subtitle of the movie 'The Power of One" to highlight that the special showcased kids making a difference in between behind the scenes segments and live performances of the soundtrack.

The soundtrack itself is what most people remember about the film though. Favorite tracks of fans range from Donna Summer's soulful song The Power of One to Weird Al's goofy Polkamon. This soundtrack has many memorable songs that are worth listening to and is a great listen for any Pokemon fan. My personal favorite is Wonderland by Angela Via as it has a whimsical fantasy sound to it within the pop music sound.

While it didn't carry much impact that Pokemon as a whole has done. Though it did help solidify that Pokemon was more or less staying. This also meant Pokemania was still going strong.

As Pokemon continues to reach that thirty year milestone, the strength of the old with the innovation of the new generations shows that Pokemon has came a long way. No matter how old you are the question still remains, do you wanna be a master of Pokemon?

Great article! I sorta missed the Pokemon boat somehow. I think the recent Detective Pokemon was the first Pokemon related entertainment I ever consumed, despite having that Pokemon 20000 movie on VHS at one point.

To me the first movie slowly became well aged cheese. Not the best, but its still fun to watch what I used to like as a kid. Now though, I think Detective Pikachu is the cream of the crop of Pokemon films.

personally i found the first movie much more memorable, i very rarely watched 2000 because, well, this was at the time when the card game was already banned from schools and at this time and i didn't have any personal friends to play the card game with anymore. i remember catching it on cartoon network a couple of times but the only thing i remember about it was the legendary birds plotline and that was it. oh, and mezase master from retrojunk quoting some of the lines once, lol.
