The Sonic v Mario debate

In my childhood I was no stranger to gaming, heck it became an inevitable pastime with the systems that I got over the years. But in my 3rd grade class when a familiar blue hedgehog and Italian plumber were in a console war, an argument from another student began, and his name was Josh.

It was just another regular day in class, the day was almost over and we were just farting around to make the time pass when out of the blue I'm asked, "Do you like Mario, or Sonic?" I replied with both, mentioning afterward that I owned both an NES and a Genesis at the time. From what I learned, Joshua practically worshipped Mario and had a hatred against Sonic. I never quite understood why, but it's what led to a harsh friendship.

One day during a cafeteria break I tried to manage to get him to be a little more respectable over the opinion of liking both characters, telling him that hating me for liking Sonic would be like telling me what I shouldn't be allowed to eat for a cafeteria lunch. He didn't really say anything after that, but the next day was when things started to change.

He still wasn't easily convinced after what I said before, so I made another comparison telling him that Mario and Sonic can both zip through levels by running, so that at least was a shared concept aside from you know, Mario getting all sorts of power ups, which is another thing I should have mentioned, Mario is basically overpowered while Sonic just has shields and rings to back him up.

I know I sound like I'm nerding out here, but this was the only way I could get him to turn over a new leaf and just accept the blue blur for what he was. We did make our amends after that, but it was the last school year we'd see each other. It's unknown these days if he even talks about Sonic at all, but I had a feeling of satisfaction after getting him to understand the importance of another's likes and dislikes.

Have you ever had a bit of friendly rivalry? Leave a comment and as always, see you next article!

Never hated Sonic, but I have always been more of a Mario and Nintendo guy.

Also, speaking of the friendly rivalry thing, my best friend (whom I’ve known since the second grade) and I disagreed over a few things. He always felt King Kong won the battle at the end of King Kong vs Godzilla, and I did not. And we argued a great deal over which song was better in 1987, Lean On Me or La Bamba (I said Lean On Me). Nowadays we still joke about those old rivalries.

Actually it originally had a / there, but for some reason putting those in a title gives an error in the Admin panel and the article won’t post. So I changed it to “v” like with Batman v Superman. LOL

err, hey vapor any way you can correct the article title? i could've sworn i put vs. and not just v before submitting.
