Hometown Love: Local Childhood Eats

Everyone has a hometown that they grew up in. A place that they can call home. For me, that is Fairport New York. While I moved around a lot both as a kid and as an adult, I still call it home. It's where I grew up the most and where most of my memories are at. There were places that I loved going to as a kid that I love and miss to this day. While I have made a couple exceptions, they aren't so far out of town.

Bill Gray's

There is always a local or at least statewide burger joint everyone goes to. This was mine. Bill Grey's was something the family did together. The memories of going there with my mother or my grandfather still linger with me. Along with the arcade while waiting for food to be made.

The food itself is standard of a burger joint. Hamburgers, fries, hot dogs, ect. The burgers were places on giant rolls, the hot dogs were from a state favorite, Zwigles, I loved their onion rings, thin and crispy. However the best thing on the menu is a local dish called the garbage plate though they call it a great plate. It's macaroni or potato salad, home fries, a choice of burger patties or hot dogs, and a meaty hot sauce to go on top of it, usually served with sliced bread or rolls. Greatness all on one plate.

Amiel's Subs

This place is a favorite of mine and honestly cannot be topped by any other sub shop. While it wasn't until the 2000s that there was one locally, there is one not too far from there. But what makes it the best? The bread. Not only is it fresh baked, but it tastes amazing. My personal favorite growing up was cheese, lettuce, and mayo. Simple, yet amazing. Top it off with a Pepsi or Coca-Cola and it is heaven.

Abbot's Frozen Custard

So enough about regular food, let's get some dessert in by getting some Frozen Custard. As far as Ice cream goes, you had two choices, Friendly's or Abbot's. Abbots usually won because on a summer evening during, it hit the spot. You didn't have to lick it, you could bite into it if you wanted to. Best way to have it though, is a float. Smooth, creamy, and goes well after a dinner on the grill or after playing all day during summer vacation.

While things change and time passes, there are some things that don't change and in this case, that's a good thing and remember, live life and live nostalgic.

My favorite local eats growing up were my local pizza place (Barton's Pizzeria) and my local burger joint (Miner-Dunn).

great article we have a couple of places like your icecream spot locally
we have frosty freeze and the frosty mug if you want a burger your better off going to the frosty mug they make great big homestyle cheese burgers and you can still get your icecream but when i was growing up we had frosty freeze 2 which was better than both my mom would always go by a local goodwill and me and my brother would always hit the video store and frosty freeze 2 which were on each side of the goodwill and you could always get the huge custards from there that place was awesome.
