Memories of a Perfect Weekend

Who doesn't enjoy the weekend? Time away from school or work, a way to spend time with family and friends or just kick back and relax and enjoy life for a while. For me, weekends were special as a kid and I have great memories of them as an adult. Different kinds of outings, adventures and experiences growing up. I'll be sharing a few of them with you all from times with friends to times with family. Now lets get started with the beginning of the weekend shall we?

Friday nights were pretty nice, My mom and I would tend to stay home and watch whatever was on TV, put on a movie or I would just watch Friday night cartoons like Cartoon Cartoon Fridays on Cartoon Network, Friday Night Nicktoons on Nickelodeon or TGIF on ABC. Along with the rare occasion of sleeping over at a friend's place or having a friend over. I remember staying up until two in the morning just talking to a couple friends during a sleep over. No specific topics, just talking about whatever came to mind. Another was at a friend's place with pizza, video games and movies from Blockbuster until we all fell asleep. Other things were family events like baby showers, celebrations and random gatherings, birthday parties with friends or family or a trip to the movies. Sometimes we went to a place called FunScape, think Discovery Zone, but much bigger and with more stuff like mini golf and motion simulators. I can remember going there Easter weekend for egg hunts and for nights with family friends and their kids.

Saturday was where the real fun was had. Getting up in the morning and watching Saturday morning cartoons on multiple stations. I usually watched One Saturday Morning with Popular Mechanics for Kids, Pepper Ann and Recess, Fox Kids with Digimon and Kids WB with Pokemon and Batman while eating cereal, I remember swiping my mom's Peanut Butter Crunch on occasion. After that I would go with my mom to the mall or we would have random road trips. Once we got so distracted by the waterfalls that we ended up in another state. I remember the trips to the mall where we would go into the random shops like Hot Topic and Spencer's with trips to the toy store and video game stores. I used to visit the arcade in FYE while my mom shopped in the store part of FYE. Favorite game there was a Simpsons arcade game. Lunch was either Johnny Rockets which was a fifties themed restaurant, Friendly's, or the food court. I remember once we went to a place called Jack Aster's. It was a fun place. They had paper on the tables and you could draw on them and keep it. When I got into card games, my Saturdays after that were spent at a local card shop making new friends and playing the game. When we didn't go to the mall, my mother and I would get McDonald's or Burger King and eat by the lake and chat while we ate. After we got home and ate dinner I used to watch America's Funniest Home Videos followed by Cops. After that I watched Snick or Toonami and usually went to bed after Are You Afraid of the Dark?. Another thing that I did on occasion was have a contest with my mom of who can stay up longer. We would watch movies throughout the night, though I tended to lose a lot until I got older.

Sundays were usually days to relax and take it easy or play outside with friends. Whether it was playing backyard sports, hanging out and riding bikes around town to the local gas station and the parks or to a friend's place, or just playing video games and watching TV - usually movies that stations played or just cartoons at home. Other times it was just getting things done around the house or going grocery shopping. At night, both my mother and I would watch Wonderful World of Disney together before I went to bed for the night and to go back to school the next day.

When looking back, I feel these memories I will always cherish and love until the day I pass on. Looking back as an adult, I see that these are the memories that matter to me, the little things in life. Just remember to cherish the small memories that may not seem like much back then, because who knows,? In the end they may just change your mood and maybe, just maybe, change your perspective on life.

And with that, until next time, live life and live nostalgic.

I used to love going to my local mall on the weekends. I wish I could go back to the 90's and revisit it.

Thanks :) I enjoy doing these types of articles, though it takes a lot more inspiration to do. After my annual Nickelodeon article I'll probably do a Pokemon article next. Since that has it's own set of memories I'd like to share.

I find it interesting how much better weekends seemed when we were kids. Things were simple and expectations were so low. I really miss that. Great article!

I always enjoy the articles in which you explore some set of memories. They are your best works. This one is no exception. It definitely puts me in mind of a perfect weekend. Great stuff, TDitH.
