Top 9 videos of 1999

I made this list of nine videos because I would have just kept listing videos. I need to be more concise. To anybody reading this my list leans more towards the alternative genre.

“New” No Doubt

This was the only music video No Doubt released in 1999. The song was originally released for the soundtrack to the movie Go which is about raves. That’s why the music video has a rave theme. This song eventually ended up being re-released on the album “Return of Saturn”. This video is one of my favorite No Doubt videos. I liked this video so much in 1999 I made a Halloween costume based on the outfit Gwen wore in this video. It was not very accurate or good, and nobody knew what I was dressed as.

Favorite scene: When Gwen meets up with the bouncer who is dressed similarly to her.

“What’s my age Again?” Blink-182

What more can I say than running naked guys. My crush on Mark Hoppus may be another reason I like this video so much. Running naked Blink-182 seemed to be a running gag in 1999. (no pun intended)

Favorite scene: When Blink-182 goes in the tv.

“Learn to Fly” Foo Fighters

I like this video because the band members play other characters. I don’t know if I have a favorite one. I like the two fat ladies, the school girl, the sexy stewardess, and the effeminate flight attendant. Taylor makes a hot stewardess. I heard this video was banned after September 11th.

Favorite scene: The live footage of Dave singing.

“When I Grow up” Garbage (Big Daddy version)

Sadly this version of the music video did not make it on their “Absolute Garbage” DVD. I think you can find it on the DVD for the movie Big Daddy. This video is on my list of top five Garbage music videos.

Favorite scene: When Shirley is sitting and stomps her feet.

“Bodyrock” Moby (bad dancers version)

There is not much else to this video just footage of bad dancing and shocked looks on Moby’s face. There is no favorite scene. I like all the bad dancing.

“Why Do you get a Job?” the Offspring

I didn’t like this song much when it first came out. Good economic times can do that to you. Now this song has taken a whole new relevance. There are a few celebrities in this video like Bob Eubanks. I use to like the “the Kids aren’t Alright”, but my local rock station KROQ played that song into the ground. I can’t listen to “The Kids aren’t Alright” anymore. I think the scene with the girls at the burger place looks so 1999 with their butterfly hair clips.

Favorite scene: When the guy from the Pretty Fly for a White Guy video makes an appearance.

“It’s all about the Pentiums” Weird Al Yankovic

When I first saw this video I was not really into computer/internet culture. Even as I watch it now and it’s outdated it’s still funny. My favorite lyric is “My new computer's got the clocks, it rocks
But it was obsolete before I opened the box
”. When I got my first computer I quoted the song.

Favorite scene: Where the guy has an etch-a-sketch at his desk.

“Take a Picture” Filter

This song is really mellow. I think it’s a beautiful song even when I learned what it was really about. It has somewhat of a whimsical fantasy element to it. I heard this video was also banned because of September 11th.

Favorite scene: The mermaid holding the fishbowl.

“Army” Ben Folds Five

Listening to this song at fifteen I thought it was a goofy narrative about Ben Folds. I seem to enjoy this song much more as an adult.

Favorite scene: When the band performs to a cardboard “crowd”.

Some good bands here, except Blink182. Man I hate their music.

I don't know about Marilyn Manson. Maybe I'll write another list for a different year or more videos from 1999.

Cool, I gotta watch some of these videos now. I never had MTV so while I love music videos, I only know the ones from my favorite bands. So watching these will be a new experience for me.

Great. Now I can't get that "Take A Picture" song out of my head. LOL.

Seriously though, this is a great list, and in my opinion it is a very good representation of the style of sound we heard leading up to the new millennium.

While I myself was not listening to much of these songs (I was in a "heavy metal" phase at that time), I do know that some of these tunes were getting tons of airplay at the time.

Thanks for this pikachulover!
