A Mid-90's Saturday With c_b_f

Saturdays were the best as a kid, especially in the 90's, for several reasons. These include no school and it being the best day of the week for cartoons. Every major network had a cartoon block and would try to crush each other.  The result was a ton of great cartoons. My favorite by far was Fox Kids but would I bounce to CBS on occasion.

But those aren't the only reasons. Saturdays were great for me, and in this article I will explain why. Let's get started.

The day starts with the sun shining in my eyes. The air is crisp. It's hard to explain, but Saturdays to me just seemed to have a freshness in the air, a freedom. No one had to wake me up, it just happened. Anyways, I had to beat my brothers to theTV or else I would be stuck watching Bill Dance fall into the lake again, or pull a bee's nest down on his head. I mean how many times can he do this and still be funny? Anyway, I would hog the TV from 8:00 to 11:30 AM watching cartoons.

Fox Kids had the best cartoon block out there.  But I hated Life With Louie for some reason. I just couldn't stand that show, so when it started coming on at 11:30 it was time for a brief intermission to ride bikes.

I was never the best at riding bikes, and I have the scars to prove it. But that never stopped me from wanting to, and truthfully my brother's bike was probably too big for me at the time. But, whatever. I tried anyway. Sometimes the neighbor's kids would come up. They were the Irvin girls, and my brother's friend Mike. Anyway, we would play anything from basketball to water war but when we rode bikes, Mikey would always have something to say about my bike skills. And when we were playing gas station we would pretend the bikes were motorcycles. Since I was the youngest, I would pretend to put gas in their bikes. Mikey would start his jabs at me, making fun of me. I had a temper as a kid, so once on his next turn around I stuck a stick in his spokes.

He wasn't hurt. More worried about his bike than anything, and to my surprise he thought it was funny.

After we had our fun on the bikes we would play basketball for about an hour or two. We listened to music while we played. Then at about 4 o' clock we would all play a game of baseball Everyone was included in the game, so it lasted about 2 hours. We only did this maybe once a month, but it was fun. After the game we all went back inside to cool off and it was usually time to watch....

From 6:05 to 7:05 PM WCW had some great wrestling. Flair, Sting, Vader, Hogan, Savage.... always a good show. And I never missed it! After all, it was the show that made me a wrestling fan.

After that we would go back outside and play games like Freeze Tag or Cops & Robbers. When we played Cops & Robbers, we would have characters like a master escape artist or an explosives expert (named Snake). That was my favorite character to play. I would be handcuffed or tied to a tree, but would slip out and the cops would come get my character and act as though the place was rigged, LOL. It was lots of fun.

When it started getting dark we would come in and watch Snick. Right after Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, we were supposed to go to bed. But we would sneak out and play Flashlight tag or Ghost In The Graveyard.

We would play until we got called home. I think my mom knew what we were doing, because she was never too mad when we got caught.

Saturdays were a blast, unlike the dreaded Sundays which will be the subject of my next article.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this. Tell me about your Saturdays.

Saturdays were all about TV for me (but then again, so was every other day). X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman on FOX Kids, then switch over to ABC for Cow-Boys of Moo-Mesa or The Addams Family cartoon, maybe try out an episode of Saved By The Bell: The New Class on NBC, before switching back to FOX for WMAC Masters and getting my wrestling fix from WWF Superstars. If I did go outside it was just a trip to my favorite comic book store, that was the true Saturday destination. After all, you needed an hour or more to browse all the back issues.

Man, you guys really knew how to take full advantage of a Saturday! So many great activities and games. I see a great many similarities to my own Saturday exploits. Sure, the activities may have been different, but it was really only about getting in time with your friends and neighbors and making the most of being free from school.

We used to take Nerf basketballs,(the soft, vinyl, stuffed kind) wrap them in duct tape, and hit them with wooden bats in a game of Home Run Derby. If we could hit the ball onto the roof of our building (which was tall enough to fit an RV in), then it was a Home Run.

Travel in the woods, wrestle with pillows, play video games, record ourselves on cassette tape or video, etc., etc.

So much fun to be had on a sunny Saturday. I get to do all new things now that I have kids. I can be a part of their own favorite things about a Saturday, and it is a blessing.
