Nickelodeon I used to remember
Nick Nick Nick Nick Nick Nick Nickelodeon!!!!!
Oh my, how those words bring back memories. I
was born in '93, so I grew up with vintage Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. Now
nowadays, college can get so stressful that many days I just wanna go back to
those times again, watching Nick in the afternoon and watching Nick Gas. Come
back with me will you?
Garfield and Friends
Ah, this is perhaps one of the best shows I
remember. This show is about Garfield and his misadventures with Odie, and also
including segments of U.S Acres which was another Comic Strip by Jim Davis. (
Didn't know that, honestly looked that up on Wikipedia as I'm writing this
article. The more you know.)
Anyways, I remember Garfield airing I believe it
was around 3 or 4 in the afternoon on Nick. I was in first grade, and remember
my mom getting me off the bus, and I went inside grabbed a snack and something
to drink and watched Garfield.
Rugrats
Ah, Rugrats. A staple in every 80-00's kid's
childhood. The misadventures of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Angelica, and Susie
were classic and never get old.
I remember this airing at 7:00 and 7:30 every
night on Nick. This was usually my family's dinner time so my parents and I
would sit on the sofa, eat dinner, and watch Rugrats. My dad still to this day,
If I'm watching an old episode will walk by and randomly say "Clan of the
Duck".
Hey Arnold!
Hey Arnold was another staple childhood favorite
of mine. And what I have found interesting growing up, is that unlike Rugrats,
it wasn't universally loved by kids. For example, my best friend hates it.
Anyways, Hey Arnold was the show about Arnold
and his friends who lived in New York and their adventures about being a kid. I
mean lets remember now, the episode where Arnold and Gerald get lost in the
city as fruits. The one where they skip school, and have a horrible day and
come to find out it was surprise carnival day? This show brings back so many
memories. In fact as I write this, I can hear the subway song in my head. Come
on. Let's sing. " Lets all hold hands, here on the subway, because we've
been stuck here in the dark for way to long!!!!!"
Anyways, My best memory of Hey Arnold was that
it used to come on in the morning's before I went to elementary school. This
was the same time also that my Pappy retired, so he would put me on the bus in
the morning. Well, my pappy was my best friend and frankly, a kid at heart, so
me and him would sit down together every morning and eat breakfast and watch
Hey Arnold together. I remember when I first saw the trailer for the Hey
Arnold! Movie ( I believe it was in front of Rugrats in Paris, please correct
me if I'm wrong), I called him and told him the great news. We planned on
seeing it together. To this day, when I watch Hey Arnold, it always feels like
we're still watching together. He died back in 2003. Brings me to tears every
time.
SpongeBob SquarePants
Ah, SpongeBob. We all have different memories of
the big yellow sponge. And all of us have different opinions on what the best
episode is. I think we can all agree though that the best episodes were made
2004 and earlier.
My best memory of SpongeBob I would have to say
is when my dad and I first saw the “Ripped Pants" episode. I'd say I was 5
or 6. Every time after that, when we messed up or even dropped something, we
would yell “I ripped my pants!". It really got funny when my dad would
fart, then yell the phrase. He still does to this day.
Blues Clues
Blue's Clue's is what we come to next, while yes I know it
wasn't technically a Nickelodeon show, but a Nick Jr show, I think it
still counts. Personally to me it does.
We all know the premise to the show. Basically the main character is a guy named Steve, who's dog Blue, is like awesomely smart, so he leaves clues around the house for Steve to put together and solve. It also involved a cast of many members of their house hold. For example, Pail and Shovel, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper, and Mail Box. Gosh, who could forget the mail song?
Blue's Clue's was the signature show for me to watch. I was obsessed. Ask any member of my family to name one TV show associated with me when I was <10 and they will say Blue’s Clues. I had a colorable cardboard Blue’s Clues house that my grandparents bought for me. It even came with crayons that looked like Steve's crayons on the show. Needless to say, it was awesome. I actually wonder what happened to that thing.... I think it got thrown out when we moved. But I digress.
Oh and let’s not forget the Nickelodeon Prime Time Specials involved with this show. As a kid you knew something big was up when Nick aired a Nick JR special on a special prime time block usually at 7 or 8 at night. This happened multiple times over the course of Nick Jr, and even still happens today, but for Blue's Clue's I only recall it happening twice. Once when Blue was on his big treasure hunt (in-which I just found out aired on Monday March 8th,1999). And the one that I went seriously ape crap over, which was the special that Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper had their baby Paprika. This special aired at 7 Pm on October 21st, of 2001. This is weird because I swear I was younger when this premiered, but I guess I was in 3rd grade. None the less, according to my mom I went ape crap over this episode, like my family had to have dinner done and eaten by 7 in-order for us to watch this.
That's it for part of one of these articles. I plan to write many more. Just to give a sneak peak of the shows I will be featuring... Legends of the Hidden Temple, Double Dare, Little Bill... And Many More! So Please turn back in! Same Bat-Time, Same Bat-Channel!
* It should be noted that this article I first published on Retrojunk, so that is why the font is messed up. I added Blues Clues for Retro-Daze though. So I guess you can all this a Retro-Daze exclusive*

Fact: Garfield and Friends is NOT an original Nickelodeon series.

I too greatly enjoyed Garfield and Friends, though when I watched it it was airing on network television. I was not aware that U.S. Acres was a comic strip by Davis that inspired the second half of each show. Thanks for that info.
I never watched much of Rugrats or Hey Arnold!, so I can't really comment on them. I do know that their popularity (especially Rugrats) was readily apparent, even if you never watched a single episode. They were everywhere at one time. Lots of commercialization.
I think my favorite SpongeBob episode is the one where SpongeBob meets Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy. You have to love Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway!
My daughter was a big Blues Clues fan when she was around three years old. She hasn't seen an episode of it for a few years now, but I feel a bit nostalgic for it, only because of the enjoyment we got out of it together.
Thanks for this article (and exclusive addition) skibeast!
