Are they from the same company? If so, perhaps it's just a way to put two different covers out to appeal to a more varied customer base? If not, I'd say that explains it.
You love this signature.

Well, I believe both sets were produced at Paramount.

The second one might be either a collector's edition or a reissue. I've seen this with a few DVD sets of TV shows.

They did a nice job on the artwork of the second one. It looks very much like Lucy and her pose from the first one.

I've seen the artwork version of Season 1 today at Target. I'm going with the guess that it's a reissue of the previous release.

Both sets have pretty much the same features:
Episodes of the radio show, the behind the scenes stuff, photo galleries and more. "Magic can happen to you."

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's still the exact same set, it's just in a slimcase set with a redesigned cover. It seems to be something most companies are doing these days as it's more cost efficient... not to mention it takes up less shelf space.
However, I have seen slimcase versions of old DVD sets that still uses the same exact cover that the original did. The redesigns seem to be in Paramount's practice. |

Are there different individual box cover designs for season 1 of The Andy Griffith Show? I thought I saw some.

I haven't seen anything about that. The boxart used on both Amazon and CBSstore seems to be the original.
