Sometimes the biggest cultural impact starts with an animated TV ad from the 1950's Maypo is an artifically flavored oatmeal hot cereal. In the 1950's, this cartoon kid would yell, "I Want My Maypo", because Maypo tasted so good his dad would eat it all before he could get any. By the mid-1960's the phrase, "I Want My Maypo", was turned into Gold with an ad featuring famous sports athletes, all whining that well known line. MTV was built by generation "Maypo", but the MTV founders noticed that newer generations didn't get it - which actually made that old Maypo line the perfect ad phrase for new cable customers to demand their MTV, especially where cable companies didn't offer it. The, "I Want MY MTV", campaign worked as an homage to "I Want My Maypo". |
Ah, so that's how that line came to be. From a bunch of guys whining for hot cereal. XD |

Lol, there's more to the story, but I tell the short version - no one want's a novel. "we gotta move these refrigerators - we gotta move these color TV's" MTV changed music, and television. What an unlikely series of events that a catch phrase from the '50's and '60's, forgotten by a new generation, thrown in the lyrics of a mega-hit song, yet picked-up and changed ever so slightly; to become the new rally cry for a kickass cable channel. That's the 80's fer ya! |
