And that is accurate to a degree. But if you were to dress up for say, a 50's party, you would see poodle skirts and hairstyles that were reflected in the actual folks of the time, and not simply musicians or movie stars.

I think people choose that look because it's the easiest to replicate and through stereotyping best "represents" the 80s. Because I'm sure 80's and contemporary style in general wasn't that much different. If you're going to an 80s theme party, you want to look outlandishly 80s. Wearing a typical 80s outfit just doesn't cut it.
