With King Kong in theaters at the moment, I thought this might be an appropriate topic for discussion. I'll start us off with the chimpanzee named Stanley who appeared alongside Annette Funicello in The Misadventures of Merlin Jones and it's sequel, The Monkey's Uncle.

You guys are gonna think I've lost it!

Anybody here remember "DAKTARI" on CBS from 1966 to 1969?

It's easier to search by, "Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion", but this cover of TV Guide features co-stars, Judy the Chimp and Cheryl Miller - from April 1st to April 7th, 1967.

Many episodes of Daktari had Judy and Clarence causing trouble at the Wameru Animal Center. Here's the entire cast including the star of the show Marshall Thompson.

Keep in mind that these were the years when CBS was determined to take its Saturday Morning ratings lead and carry it through its entire Saturday broadcast schedule. If it appealed to kids, CBS parked it on Saturday evenings. How else could you describe the network that aired "Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion" followed by "Hogan's Heroes"?

This is the rare Season One intro for "DAKTARI" from 1966:

Is there a cooler ape in video games than Donkey Kong? In my opinion, the answer is no.

Here are a couple of obscure favorites of mine. One appeared in an episode of Adventures of Superman, and the other appeared in an episode of Gilligan's Island. I'm sure I don't have to say which is which.

One of my favorite episodes of Gilligan's Island featured that weird-looking monkey who discovered the hand-made dishes would not explode when soft, but would give a powerful explosion when completely dried.

Made with plastic explosives, the dishes and Gilligan's tooth fillings made for a bang-up good time on the ol' island for the castaways.
And the little monkey enjoyed every minute of it:
