He'll always be remembered as the guy who had his chest burst open from the Alien, but he had tons of really great serious roles and was an accomplished actor. I will never forget his voice role in Watership Down. If I'm not mistaken, he was also the star of 1984. RIP John Hurt.

Wow, I never realized how many films he was in it without me realizing. Sad to see him go.

Sometimes an actor just seems to land all the choice roles. John Hurt became an overnight sensation when he appeared as Caligula in the BBC mini-series: "I, Claudius" - 1976 John was magnificent as the mad emperor of Rome in what turned out to be the greatest collection of British acting talent ever to grace American television as part of the "Masterpiece Theater" series on PBS. Many of my favorites from the UK were part of "I Claudius" - John Hurt, Derek Jacobi, Sian Phillips, Brian Blessed, George Baker and: a very young Patrick Stewart. Here's John wishing grandma a speedy journey to hell - a real family guy! Here's the dialog from the famous courtyard scene: |

That one Alien scene...
"Magic can happen to you."

John Hurt also played the War Doctor. He will be missed.

John Hurt may be hailed as one of the best actors in the world.
No one could be Hellboy's "dad" and make the audience feel the bond too! |
