Hey all, i was wondering if anyone here has tried building a retro gaming emulator out of the Raspberry Pi 2 (micro computer)?

I recently became aware of this fantastic little thing (which can be used for so many amazing projects) when I was told you could install Retropie/Emulationstation on it, get retro USB controllers, and load roms onto it.

Mine came the other day (the base model is only like $35, and you can get a "kit" with everything you need for around $60) and I've been messing around with it, getting things set up the way I like.  There *is* a bit of work involved, some command line stuff in the terminal, etc etc, but it's fairly intuitive for newbies like myself.

(*note: legally speaking you're not supposed to download ROMS for games you don't own).  <----  Just thought I'd mention that.

Anywho, even though I'm a retro game collector and own pretty much all the older consoles and hundreds of games, it's pretty cool to have everything on one tiny console that you can just play whenever you want.

SO, any of you have this set up, or maybe plan to check it out?

Hey onipar,
I actually just set up my RetroPie last month. I wrote a blog post on it at my blog: My Retro Pie

I really like it. I tried using an Ouya in the past, but the lag on it killed me. The RetroPie is simple to use, has no lag, and works great. I love that its small and can run so many systems with such an awesome user interface. I highly recommend anyone whose into retro gaming, but can't afford it. It does take a little computer know how, but there are some great tutorials that'll walk you through everything.

AH sweet, I'll take a look.  Yeah, it was a fun little project.  I'm still tweaking some things.

Actually, maybe you can help.  My video output is justified to the right side of my tv screen.  Nothing is cut off, but I kinda want it to be centered.  I tried editing the overscan properties in the terminal but it didn't work.  Any ideas?

I bet blueluigi would have some information for you on how it ranks with other emulation projects. He's pretty knowledgeable about such things.

You love this signature.

I'm liking it so far, though there are a lot of tweaks needed to get it running smoothly.  I still have to figure out how to enable game saves, and the HDMI output is giving me problems.  I was able to shift the screen a bit using the overscan properties, but I'm still not able to get it to fill the screen.  A little frustrating.

That's so strange. I had no display issues, so I never got around to tweaking anything. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

No worries.  I'm pretty sure it's my TV.  I should try plugging it into a different one.

I always wanted to mess with a Raspberry Pi. Just hadn't thought of a good project yet

There are so many crazy things you can do with it. I wish I had more knowledge of programming, and I would be able to do some other stuff with it.
