So last night I went to go see The Gallows at my local theater. One of the previews they showed was for M. Night Shyamalan's latest film, The Visit (which looks like it might just be his worst film yet).

Anyway, The Visit, like The Gallows, is a found footage film. I know it's been going on for years now, but I've truly just noticed how much the found footage genre has taken over. The Gallows marks the third found footage film I have seen this year, behind Unfriended and Project Almanac.

Found footage used to be a rare and big thing for a movie. I remember as far back as 2008 when Cloverfield came out it was still a tremendous deal. I remember everyone talking about Cloverfield's filming style.

But now it's the exact opposite. Many films now do it every year, and nobody's talking about it like they used to.

I hate the found footage format, the only reason why studios opt for it because it is DIRT CHEAP. You can film a movie for a couple million and then it is fairly easy to double or triple that at the box office.

Cloverfield is the only big budget movie that decided to go found footage and experiment with the format and I really think it was detrimental to the overall satisfaction of the movie. I've only seen it once and it made me nauseous in theaters.

I'm pretty sure that the average movie goer doesn't like found footage, but since the studios are almost guaranteed to make a profit they don't care.

They usually give me headaches, but I tend to enjoy them. I really like Abduction(ed?) and of course Blair Witch.

I think it's something that should move into the gaming arena... sort of like how Five Nights At Freddy's did it. Only that was live footage. It'd be neat to have to piece together a story with clues from lost tapes and such in a game.

Cloverfield could have been good if that wasn't the main film style..
