The theme song has lyrics, believe it or not.

Tonight on CBS, they're going to show colorized versions of the Christmas episode and "The Pickle Story".

We get to see Aunt Bee's kerosene cucumbers in color.

I'm sure you guys can imagine how I feel having grown up with the Andy Griffith Show. This series was the backdrop to my childhood in the 1960's.

The success of the Andy Griffith Show lands squarely at the feet of one of America's master showmen - Danny Thomas. Danny Thomas, along with Sheldon Leonard and William Asher; transformed television and created shows from the 50's and 60's that have stood the test of time.

I remember reading something in TV Guide that you guys might find interesting. When Danny Thomas was interviewed during the big roll-out for the "Andy Griffith Show" on CBS, Danny admitted he was surprised by the networks doubts that Andy's new show was a good idea. Understand that CBS was convinced that the new decade of the 1960's would be the end of "old fashioned" concepts like small-town "country/rural" humor.

But television was now in the hands of people that knew how to make an audience laugh! Like "The Danny Thomas Show", "The Andy Griffith Show" would showcase some of the nation's best actors and writers. Sheldon Leonard and William Asher, with the resources of Desilu Productions, assembled one of the funniest cast of characters on television at that time. Some of the richest men in broadcasting had bet against "The Andy Griffith Show" - and they were wrong!

Not only was Andy Griffith a fun show to watch but every character, no matter how minor, was well acted. Scene after scene, all Andy had to do was keep from laughing cuz Don Knotts did the heavy lifting.

But I'm still floored by how much I like this show. The Andy Griffith Show was written not for laughs, but to tell a story. With each episode we get to meet the people of Mayberry. Instead of being lame the supporting characters make the show stronger.

My favorite is actually Episode 2 from Season One - "The Manhunt".

Andy Griffith will always stand the test of time, because it is what just about anybody could imagine a perfect life being like. Who wouldn't want to live in Mayberry?

And poor old CBS began introducing one hit TV show followed by another.  From The Andy Griffith Show to Mr. Ed. Then add The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres and Gomer Pyle, USMC. And don't forget the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, The Red Skelton Hour and, the icing on this cake, Hee Haw!

I grew up during a time when television was both funny and friendly. None of this had any social relevance to the times of broadcasting. But that was the point. No one I knew wanted relevance, we wanted entertainment.
