23511The CaféI think there's common ground in there that could make a positive difference. As far as pathways to opportunity, it would be helpful if we could manage the influx of illegals and come down hard on businesses that use their labor. Stop wasting money raiding guitar manufacturers because of wood in their product, and raid businesses using illegal immigrant labor. It's not an all-in-one solution, but it could help. Then again, you need Americans who're willing to work in those jobs. When they get so many government handouts that they just choose not to work, it's hard to present them opportunities they'll consider. The things I've witnessed in this county alone with regard to the use and abuse of welfare is staggering.Vaporman87Aug 27, 2015View

23507The CaféNetwork effects and fear have given us this obsession. I think we need huge improvements in our social infrastructure on the generational scale. Starting with education and public schools. Continuing with exposure to different experiences and cultures, a food system that makes it easier for everybody to be healthy, and pathways to opportunity. We can't attack a symptom of a social ill and expect everything to be fixed. It's going to take cooperation and planning and money and a wide view that considers mass consequences.
shakin steakAug 27, 2015View

23503The Café
shakin steak wrote :
Obviously if only the victims had guns they could have protected themselves
-end quote
Sarcasm aside, it's scary to think that your life could be snuffed out in an instant with no indication of it possibly happening, and no indication that the perpetrator is even considering it. This man said he was a time bomb and when his limit was reached, he was going to accomplish his task.

Much as I stray from my conservative leanings when it comes to gun control (I think more can be done without totally shredding the 2nd amendment), I don't personally believe a longer wait time, limitations on gun show purchasing, and more scrutinizing background checks would have helped here.

No, carrying a firearm in this instance would not have saved them. I think there are instances where it would have made a difference for some (like in the theater shootings). It's like walking a tightrope between freedom to protect you and your family, and limiting access to those with criminal intent. I don't know where that happy medium is. But this type of thing really needs to cause us concern that we aren't there yet.

Scary stuff.
Vaporman87Aug 27, 2015View
