33708 | Virtual Console Thursdays | Week of 2/9/2017:

Wii U Virtual Console:

Mario VS Donkey Kong (GBA)
$6.99

After being out in Japan and Europe for so long, Nintendo FINALLY releases Mario VS Donkey Kong on the Wii U Virtual Console. Why it took them THIS long, I'll never know. With this release, it completes the set of GBA games that has been released as part of the 3DS Ambassador's Program in 2011. This was the only time GBA games were released on the 3DS, due to how limited the GBA emulation is on the 3DS. In fact, the GBA games on the 3DS Ambassador's program was not emulated, rather it used some of the GBA hardware that was still in the 3DS to where the games run natively on the system. As a result, the games lack the basic 3DS Virtual Console features like restore points, as well as disabling the option of Streetpass due to the games running in DS mode. But with the Switch coming out, maybe they will provide GBA games on there, which would lead us to being able to play both on the TV and on the go. That would be pretty sweet. I also wouldn't mind DS and 3DS emulation as well.

That said, I recommend Mario VS Donkey Kong over the other games in the series. It was designed to be a successor to Donkey Kong 94, and it was a good one at that. The sequels, on the other hand, went to a direction that's more puzzle oriented. Nothing at all like the classic Donkey Kong gameplay you'd come to expect from Donkey Kong 94.
| blueluigi | Feb 10, 2017 | |

33704 | The Café | Supposedly, the movie this is based on is actually a critique of this sort of attitude and thinking. Maybe the show will be the same. Even if it isn't, I'm still not about to cancel my Netflix. Not with a new season of Stranger Things on the way. | jkatz | Feb 10, 2017 |
