Letting local TV stations run old B-grade movies all night long just wouldn't cut it anymore.<div><br></div><div>By 1990 Saturday nights became a major battleground in major media markets across the USA and the need for new shows brought a wealth of unusual collaborations and deal making.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Like I've said many times, what you saw varied with where you live.</div><div><br></div><div>The Seattle region, with its three independent TV stations plus two PBS stations covering the same market - the competition was very fierce. The result was many cable-only series began to appear on commercial television, especially during weekends as everyone wanted a piece of the SNL crowd.</div><div><br></div><div>By 1995 Saturday nights in Seattle was spectacular, especially after midnight. From Doctor Who to The Laugh Factory. The Seattle NBC affiliate, "KING-TV 5" signed a 5-year deal with Japan's national broadcaster, "NHK - Tokyo" to air special content for the American market after SNL to battle the offerings from Seattle's very aggressive&nbsp;independent stations.</div><div><br></div><div>Beginning at midnight for 1995 - 1996, Channel 22 aired "Mystery Science Theater 3000", to the delight of non-cable subscribers, like me.</div><div><br></div><div>How do I thank a local station for giving everyone a chance to see one of the most entertaining shows that only cable subscribers had access to for a time?
