Roller Rinks! 80's Style!

Who remembers going to the roller rink in the 80's?
Who misses it like I do? Haha!

I remember going to the roller rink when I was a kid and it was so fun. Weather I was there with friends or all by myself, I still had a lot of fun. I remember loving all the wonderful lights and the loud awesome music of the 80's, and all the people crowded in there to skate!

I would walk in and go up to the counter and rent a pair of skates, put them on, and make my way to the wooden but slick rink floor. Clinging to the side rail until I felt sturdy enough to begin to skate. Then i started at a slow steady pace until i picked up a bit of speed, all while trying not to fall on my rear end. lol. Skating in and out of people going at their own various speeds. Some were slow, while others were super fast. I could never get as fast as some of those people.

Some people held hands while skating and some did tricks and still some had some cool dance moves. Every now and then the rink would have special events as well, and they would have contests and give out money or prizes.

The roller rink I remember, had a snack bar and arcade games that were hard to hear over the loud music. It also had a section where you could buy your own skates and accessories like those cute little pom poms some girls would wear on their skates. I remember some of the girls who did have their own skates and pom poms were kinda snooty. I always envied yet despised them. lol.

I also remember the D.J. who spun the records and played the music and you could go up to him and make requests. Some nightd he would be there and some nights they had a set list of music they just played.

Ahh...Dancing on 4 wheels. Those were some fun days of my childhood that are now sorely missed.

Roller rinks were a great place to hang out with your friends, put some wheels on your feet, and just have an awesome, rolling around in circles, dancin' in your skates, time!

I will always miss the roller rink just like I miss drive-ins..oh but that's another story, right. lol.

Great article! It brought back many memories of going to the skate rink for school parties. Good times.

Sometimes I wish I could go back in time to relive some of those fond memories :)

I have extremely fond memories of being in our local skating rink. I've mentioned this in the forum and on one of massreality's articles; that I grew up in a small addition of homes and at the bottom of the hill sat our skating rink. So I walked up and down our hill almost every weekend to hang out at the rink.

I still know who were expert skaters, I still hear the music playing and the sound of the arcade games (Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man being the most played ones). I can smell the hotdogs and old, worn carpeting on the benches. I can easily remember the tiny bathroom, and games we'd play (corner skate, limbo, the hokey pokey, etc.).

I miss it a great deal.

I miss the roller rinks too. I was a terrible skater, and usually spent my time in the arcade but it was an awesome atmosphere to be around.
