The original plan by Toyota corporate headquarters was to discontinue the Sequoia at the end of the 2022 model year due to extremely poor sales.

But the Tundra Truck development team was so proud of their all new full-sized truck platform that the team's lead engineer made a proposal to Toyota's executives to give the Sequoia one last chance as a "truck based" SUV off the new Tundra's platform, including the high-strength frame with solid rear axle.

Toyota headquarters agreed, and so North America gets an all new 2023 Toyota Sequoia with truck-like brawny styling and a part-time four wheel drive system for old school off-roadability.
