Although, it originated in the 2000s. Its got an awesome 80s flavor. The musicians who made this fantastic music were inspired by video games, movies and other things of the 80s. 

Their mission: Keeping things retro through music.

And they're doing a wonderful job of it.

There is a YouTube channel called New Retro Wave that features a ton of upcoming artists in the genre

A great deal of the "Tommy and the Order of Cosmic Champions" soundtrack consists of licensed synthwave, in addition to two exclusive tracks from Synthwave master, "PYLOT" (Tim Butler).
