Oh, don't forget to have plenty of money on hand.

The Capital of the United States of America, Washington DC's grand buildings would sink into the marshy soil were it not for massive foundations sunk down to bedrock supporting each building's tremendous weight.

A new visitors museum has been opened inside the huge, vaulted foundation of the Lincoln Memorial, revealing just a small section of the amazing underground structure that supports one of the Capital's “must-see” landmarks.

I’m surprised I haven’t noticed more pomp and spectacle over it. At least from businesses.

Yes indeed, this is a far cry from the year long build-up to the nation's 200th birthday in 1976. Actually, I remember “special edition” products of all types beginning to appear as early as 1974.

For 2026 I'm remembering the the good times from the past that mean “America” to me.

Saw that the other day. Great movie. River City, IA sounds like a great place to live. Especially during the 4th.

Gotta love Shipoopi.

Benjanime

Went on a trip to North Carolina and was held up in traffic over some fireworks shows here and there. I miss going on little hilltops to join groups of people setting them off.

I feel blessed to have witnessed the build-up to America's 200th Birthday for 1976. The media circus started with newspapers, periodicals, radio and television offering Bicentennial stories while consumer goods manufacturers created “Bicentennial Edition” specially marked Everything!!!

Chevrolet offered "Spirit of America" special edition cars in 1974. Available as a Vega, Nova, or Impala, the "Spirit of America" red & blue striping was offered on base level models to keep prices affordable.

Anybody remember the “Bicentennial Minute”, the nightly CBS countdown to July 4th, 1976?

Everyone who ever appeared on CBS Television could be called upon to host a story from American history.
