All this started with a lie told when the FTC started asking questions.<br /> <br /> Both Google and YouTube promoted several child-directed channels. YouTube marketed itself as a top destination for kids in presentations to makers of popular children’s products. For example, Google and YouTube told <strong>Mattel</strong> that, "YouTube is a leader in reaching children (ages 6 to 11) against top TV channels”. <strong>Hasbro</strong> was told, "YouTube is the #1 website regularly visited by kids.”<br /> <br /> But when confronted by the FTC, YouTube responded that it did not have users younger than 13 on its platform and therefore channels on its platform did not need to comply with COPPA.<br /> <br /> Eighteen, (18!), privacy and consumer-protection groups, like the <strong>Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood</strong> and the <strong>Center for Digital Democracy</strong>, filed a joint complaint with the Federal Trade Commission asking it to crack down on YouTube's data collection practices with kids.<br /> <br /> <br /> No matter how much Google and YouTube lied, my opinion is that nothing can transfer parental responsibilities from parents to corporations.
